Two new mid-range smartphones were recently launched in India. Honor launched the Honor 9i that comes with a unique Dual front and dual rear camera which is available at Rs 17,999, while Xiaomi launched Mi A1 with 12 MP + 12 MP dual rear camera setup available at Rs 14,999.
After a lot of requests form our users, we bring you the complete comparison between Honor 9i and Mi A1. Let's look at various aspects to justify if the price difference makes sense.
1. Design & Display Comparison
Honor 9i comes with a 5.9-inch Full View Full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio while Mi A1 comes with a Full HD 5.5-inch display. Both the phones have good color reproduction and viewing angles. Definitely, the full view display gives better look to Honor 9i, which also looks premium, and if you consume a lot of video multimedia content, Honor 9i display would suit better.
Both the phones have 2.5D glass protection but Mi A1 has a gorilla glass but Honor 9i does not. Also, Mi A1 comes with a type C port allowing you to transfer files via the port at a very good speed compared to Honor 9i which holds a Micro USB port.
The build quality of both the phones is solid and weigh nearly the same. The fingerprint sensor is on the back works fine on both the phones.
2. SOC/Processor Comparison
Honor 9i comes powered with company's owned 2.36 GHz Octa Core Kirin 659 Processor while Mi A1 comes powered with Snapdragon 625 processor. In terms of Antutu benchmark, kirin 659 scores 63800 which is equivalent to that of the Snapdragon 635 score of 63100, so both the phones are expected to perform in a similar manner.
3. RAM & Storage Comparison
Both Mi A1 and Honor 9i have 4GB of RAM and 64 GB on both the devices. But both the phones come with a hybrid sim slot, so either you can use it as a dual sim phone or as a single sim with extended memory.
4. Software Comparison
Xiaomi phones usually come with MIUI pre-installed which is something we don't like but things have changed with Mi A1. Xiaomi has partnered with Google for the Android One program and that's why Mi A1 runs stock android. Honor 9i, on the other hand, runs EMUI 5.1 which offers more customization and themes. There is no bloatware on both the phones making them easily responsive. Both phones are easily able to handle heavy games like Asphalt. But the stock android in Mi A1 offers extra available RAM than Honor 9i.
Mi A1 comes with the latest version of Android 7.1.2 while Honor 9i supports Android 7.0.
So clearly, on the software side, Mi A1 is better compared to Honor 9i.
5. Camera Comparison
The importance of Camera sensors is becoming exciting in the recent past and these two phones come with some great innovation.
Talking about the Camera quality and Performance of Mi A1, the rear camera is a Dual Camera with 12 MP + 12 MP setup with a color camera sensor and a telephoto lens. This dual camera setup is expensive than color + color or color + monochrome that's why we don't see it in mid-range phones. with the telephoto lens, you can zoom 2X without losing image quality. The overall quality of the photos is really good and it is safe to say that this is the best camera setup in the mid-range segment as of now. The portrait mode pictures have sharp edges with good depth effect.
The front camera of Mi A1 is a 5MP shooter with no led flash. The camera is not wide angle as well. The image quality of the front is camera average. You won't be impressed with your selfies.
On the video side, Mi A1 can record 4K videos but there is no stabilization so if your hands are shaky, videos are not going to look good.
Regarding the Camera performance on Honor 9i,
Honor 9i comes as a first-ever phone launched in India to have a dual front and dual rear camera. In the front, it has a 13 MP + 2 MP sensor while on the rear side, it has a 16 MP + 2 MP sensor. On both front and rear, one of the sensors is an RGB camera sensor while the other is a monochrome sensor. Details are captured from both cameras to make images sharper. The 2 MP sensor on both sides is used as a depth sensor, allowing you to give bokeh/depth effect to the pictures by blurring the background.
Summary of Camera Performance
- Mi A1 is better in taking pictures from the back camera, as it produces sharper images, is more stable and works well in low light condition.
- Honor 9i is better with the front camera because of the dual camera setup available.
6. Battery & Charging Comparison
Mi A1 comes with 3080mAh battery while Honor 9i comes with a slightly higher 3400mAh rated battery. Both the phones are expected to last for about a day. Though we love to see longer battery backups, as seen in many phones offering more than 4000 mAh battery. But companies are resorting to lower battery rating to keep thickness on the phone in control.
In terms of charging, both the phones come with normal 5V 2A 10W charger and do not support fast charging. These phones would take around 2 hours 20 minutes for a full charge.
7. Price Comparison
Mi A1 was launched at a price tag of Rs. 14999 and is also a Flipkart exclusive device.
Mi A1 is now available in Rose Gold color as well which looks really good. Take a look at it here on Flipkart.
Apart from the above differences, honor 9i lacks a Gyroscope sensor which is available on Mi A1. Gyroscope sensor allows you to view YouTube 360 Videos and have VR experience, but that's not possible with the Honor 9i.
So, at Suggest Phone, we believe that both the phones perform to the best in the mid-range segment, but there are few differences, which can affect the choice a user makes as per their usage.
If you are looking for a stylish phone with a beautiful bezel-less display or looking for a perfect front camera phone, you can go for Honor 9i, But if you prefer a better rear camera and a stock Android experience, you can choose Mi A1. Rest all the other aspects of RAM, performance, battery life remains almost the same on both the devices.
Honor 9i in black color looks great. It wasn't available before but it is available now. Buy Honor 9i Black from Flipkart.
