Xiaomi has been very active this year with new smartphone launches. This year they have launched Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, Redmi 4A, Redmi Y1, Mi A1 and Mi Mix 2 in India. As you can see most them are budget devices and all of them have performed really well if you look at sales numbers. Redmi Note 4 has been phenomenal. It became the best selling smartphone in India in just 6 months. Even now after 10 months after it's launch, the sales are strong. Now, people are waiting for Redmi Note 5 which is expected to launch in next month.
Xiaomi Redmi R1
Xiaomi seems to be working on a new series called the Xiaomi R1 or Redmi R1 or Mi R1. The render suggests that Xiaomi will be joining the trend of bezel-less displays and will be adding it to the budget devices. Xiaomi Redmi R1 is expected to have a 6-inch bezel-less display on the front. There will no dedicated buttons at the bottom of the device instead we will see on-screen buttons. The fingerprint sensor is expected to be on the back of the device as we have seen on other devices like the Redmi Note 4 and Mi A1. The headphone jack is expected to be on the top side of the Xiaomi R1.
One interesting thing we noticed is the presence of dual camera setup on the front. So this can be the next selfie focussed smartphone from Xiaomi after Redmi Y1.
Recently, we have seen OPPO and Vivo bringing a dual camera and bezel-less display phones to the mid-range segment. So, with Xiaomi Redmi R1, Xiaomi will be able to compete with OPPO and Vivo in this segment who are increasing their market share at a rapid pace.
It is good to see bezel-less displays and dual cameras coming to the budget segment. We hope manufacturers bring IP67/68 Ratings to the budget segment as well in next 2-3 years.
