Updated on 2018-07-04 by Tejas Upmanyu
It is the time of the mid-rangers. As people start seeing the value mid-range smartphones have to offer, the category has been bursting onto the scene, with more and more smartphones with better and more complete set of features to woo the customers. Here we have compared two of these amazing mid-range devices which give a hard knock on the grounds of ‘value for money’ and stack up against the likes of much loved OnePlus flagships. As the number of solid choices increases, so does the confusion concerning which is better than other - we’ve got you covered. In this article, we bring you the comparison of Asus Zenfone 5z vs Honor 10.
1. Design & Build
Both the smartphones, being confident mid-rangers come from the same school of marketing strategy which seeks to levy the iconic iPhone X notch, with minimal side bezels and a polished metal body draped by solid glass on both sides, this is the story of almost every high-end/mid-range smartphone launched in 2018, and both Asus Zenfone 5Z, Honor 10 fit right in.
That doesn’t take away the fact that both of these smartphones are hilariously gorgeous. You can keep staring at them, as long as you want.
Starting with Zenfone 5Z, the smartphone has a polished, chamfered metal finish with glass on both sides. The smartphone looks a lot on the premium end and weighing in at 155grams, It is quite comfortable to hold as well. At front fascia, there’s almost nothing but a display with the exception of a well-cut notch.
Honor 10 has a new trend in design, much like Huawei’s P20 Pro, the ‘Phantom Blue’ model comes with a rear which has a gradual gradient from aqua to purple, which looks refreshing and stunning. Weighing at 153 grams, the smartphone is quite nice to hold in hand. Both the smartphones speak highly of premier design and build quality but are also prone to fingerprints and smudges and of course, at the end of It - It is glass and It breaks. So, we don’t vouch for durability here, If kept well, these smartphones are built well and will age gracefully.
In the design front, we’ll give Honor 10 a slight nick - all credits to the Phantom Blue model, but Asus Zenfone 5Z is quite a beauty in Itself as well, so we’ll leave the judgment on you.
Asus Zenfone 5Z brings a 6.2 inch, IPS LCD Panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels at an aspect ratio of 18.7:9, all thanks to the notch. The pixel density stands out at ~402PPI what It translates to is really punchy colours, strong contrast levels, and amazing viewing angles. The display carries a lot of brightness, which makes sunlight readability a thing on Zenfone 5Z. The colours are well balanced and crisp, without too much oversaturation.
Talking of Huawei Honor 10, the display is 5.84 inches, IPS LCD panel much like the Zenfone 5Z with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels same as Zenfone 5Z but since the display is a bit smaller, the pixel density is a little higher at ~432 PPI. This display speaks quality or should we say exudes quality. The colours are amazing, crisp and sharp with decent brightness levels not as much as Zenfone 5Z. The contrast levels are quite impressive as well, overall we rate it as a solid mid-range offering from Huawei.
In the display comparison, we rate Asus Zenfone 5Z having a better display when compared to Huawei Honor 10, the difference is not very big though.
3. Internals & Performance
Often we find that Internals are almost same for budget-impressive mid-rangers but that’s not the very case here. Starting with Zenfone 5Z packing the best out there - Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 at its heart with 8 cores (4x2.7 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4x1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver). The performance, we don’t need to give a certificate here as It is the best you can get in the Android space right now in 2018. Coupled with a large, 6GB of RAM, It takes multi-tasking, app switching times to shreds of a second. On the gaming front, there is Adreno 630 which again is more than capable of handling games from the Play Store.
Zenfone 5Z packs the best processor in Android phone in 2018- Qualcomm Snapdragon 845
Let’s talk about Honor 10 now, with HiSilicon Kirin 970 at Its heart, the Huawei’s foundry is not yet in the same ranks as Snapdragons. Kirin 970 is an octa-core SoC with 4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 and 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53. The performance is undoubtedly lag-less and stutters free, It is almost flagship grade as you won’t see it falling off on performance scales but It is not close to Snapdragon 845 yet.
For gaming, Mali-G72 MP12 is there, it is capable but not the best of the lot. Presence of 6GB of RAM makes things a lot smoother and snappier, so you won’t observe any major difference in real-life usage but we expect Snapdragon 845 to age better than Kirin 970. Asus Zenfone 5Z comes in three variants with 64 GB, 6GB of RAM, 128 GB, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB, 8 GB RAM while the Huawei Honor 10 is available out there with 128 GB, 6 GB RAM configuration. Asus Zenfone 5Z seems to shatter skies with 274499 points on AnTuTu Benchmark while Huawei Honor 10 is comfortably behind at 200440 points. Clearly, in the processor and power comparison, Zenfone 5Z easily wins over the Honor 10.

4. Camera Comparison
Mid-range has been seeing a lot of competition in terms of camera performance and here we have some of it as well. Asus Zenfone 5Z sports a dual camera setup comprised of a primary 12 MP (f/1.8, 24mm, 1/2.55", 1.4µm, PDAF) shooter and a secondary 8 MP (f/2.0, 12mm, 1/4", 1.12µm) sensor with gyro EIS and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. On the other side, Huawei Honor 10 features a dual camera organization with a primary 16 MP (f/1.8) sensor and a secondary 24 MP B/W (f/1.8) sensor with gyro-EIS (1080p) and LED flash.
Now that we have got specs out of the way, let’s talk about the image quality of both of these setups. Asus Zenfone 5Z captures beautiful shots in daylight with details in abundance, nice contrast levels, and colours. The exposure is right on point as well but If you love taking zoomed shots, then this is going to be disappointing for you. In unfavourable conditions and low-light, the camera isn’t exactly any special besides there’s coarse noise, But the autofocus is really amazing on Zenfone 5Z. The performance is quite competitive in the mid-range and Its a decent camera with a score of 90 on DxOMark.
Asus Zenfone 5Z captures beautiful shots in daylight with details in abundance, nice contrast levels, and colours.
Huawei Honor 10 takes stunning daylight photos with deep contrast levels, less aggressive AI based oversaturation, enough details, and low-levels of noise thanks to multi-frame stacking. There is over sharpening sometimes but not too much. As with Zenfone 5Z, low-light performance isn’t all too impressed with a lot of softness and noise. Contrast gets all too misplaced but the colour detail is well preserved.
The front cameras have some substantial difference with Zenfone 5Z packing an 8 MP (f/2.0, 24mm, 1/4", 1.12µm), gyro EIS, 1080p sensor which takes decent daylight selfies but nothing much impressive in low-light, Honor 10, on the other hand, flaunts a 24 MP, f/2.0, 1080p which takes in a lot of details and while the day-light performance is good, nightlife is certainly a lot behind. So which one is better?
Both the cameras are quite close by being excellent mid-range options but if you are a camera freak, not so much. Huawei Honor 10 takes a slight lead over Asus Zenfone 5Z.
So here we are Software, we love software and its ability to make the hardware fly or stoop to the basement of hell. Asus Zenfone 5Z runs on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with ZenUI custom skin on top and this is quite close to stock Android, so we do have a soft spot there. Huawei Honor 10 runs on Android Oreo 8.1 as well, with EMUI8.1 on top, while we’ve said it previously that EMUI is one of the most sophisticated skins out there and It still stands.
There are a plethora of features in EMUI 8.1, some more useful than others, some not. EMUI sees an addition of Machine Learning to predict usage patterns and optimize performance and other aspects of your smartphone quite like MIUI 10. The experience is stutter-free and frustration free, responsive and speedy at all times. ZenUI is not that loaded but that also means better performance, snappier interface and yes no tons of bloatware, which EMUI 8.1 is replete with.
Both the skins support the notch and there comes the face unlock, who could miss that? We’d like to say that EMUI is the better one with lots of features but the simplicity and efficacy of ZenUI make us consider that.
6. Battery, Charging & More
Starting out with Zenfone 5Z, 3300mAh battery inside this one is just enough to pull you through the day but If you are a heavy user, the custom demands you keep the charger with you. Expectedly, there is fast charging support via USB-C on the device. Huawei Honor 10 runs on a 3400mAh battery which lasts well through the day without any compromises. Fast charging is there via USB-C but It is not as impressive as we’d expected. There is no wireless charging as well, despite those shiny glass backs.
Moreover, there is no IP rating for both these smartphones, so the distant from liquids you keep them, the better. For music lovers, Asus Zenfone 5Z comes with DTS X support via 3.5mm jack. Which pumps powerful, balanced and enriched sound.
7. Price & Availability
Asus Zenfone 5Z is a Flipkart Exclusive smartphone launched on 4th of July so may the force be with you if you wanna buy this beauty. the 6GB-64GB is priced at Rs 29999 only, 8GB-128 GB is priced at 32999 and 8GB-256GB is priced at 36999.
