Asus zenfone max pro vs redmi note 5 detailed comparison

Xiaomi reached the top spot in Indian market because of the success of Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, Redmi 4A and Mi A1 in 2017. This year we have seen the seen successors of the Redmi series and Mi A2 is coming in next few months. The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro which were launched in Feb 2018 have performed really well. Availability issues have definitely irritated a lot of customers who have been trying for weeks to get their hands on Redmi Note 5 Pro. Getting Redmi Note 5 hasn't been a problem though.

Asus has launched a power packed device and it is priced between Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. We think it is a great phone and users who were thinking of buying a Note 5 or Note 5 Pro, might now go for Zenfone Max Pro.

In our previous article, we covered the comparison of Asus Zenfone Max Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro. Here we take a look at the detailed comparison of Redmi Note 5 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro.

1. Design

Redmi Note 5 has a design similar to Redmi Note 4. It has a metal unibody design with curved edges and the camera is placed at the center on the back. Asus Zenfone Max Pro also has a metal unibody design, it is not all metal though. The dual camera on the back is placed vertically on the corner similar to what we have seen on iPhone X. Design-wise, both phones look kind of just fine and there's nothing special to talk about.

2. SoC/Processor

.Xiaomi's Redmi Note 5 has the old and efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset while the Asus Zenfone Max Pro runs on the latest Snapdragon 636 chipset. Performance wise, SD 626 packs much more power than SD 625. In Antutu benchmarks, Zenfone Max Pro scores around 115000 which is 75% more than Redmi Note 5's score of around 65000. So in the processor department, Asus Zenfone Max Pro is way better than Redmi Note 5. If you are interested then take a look at our detailed comparison of Snapdragon 625 vs 626 vs 630 vs 630.

3. Display

Both Note 5 and Zenfone Max Pro M1 come with a  5.99-inch display with Full HD+ resolution and aspect ratio of 18:9. They also have 2.5D gorilla glass protection which adds to the premium look of these phones. Both displays have good colour reproduction and viewing angles and you won't see a big difference between these two.

4. RAM & Storage

Redmi Note 5 is available in 2 variants: 3GB RAM - 32GB Storage and 4GB RAM - 64GB Storage. Asus Zenfone Max Pro has been launched in 2 variants as of now: 3GB-32GB and 4GB-64GB. One more variant with 6GB-64GB will be launched after some time.

5. Software

Redmi Note 5 runs on MIUI 9 which is a heavily customized skin based on old Android Nougat. Asus Zenfone Max Pro, on the other hand, comes with latest stock Android Oreo with very little bloatware. Asus has also promised to provide next 2 big Android updates: Android P and Android Q. So, Zenfone Max Pro is obviously a better option when it comes to software.

6. Camera Comparison

Let's talk about camera comparison of these 2 smartphones. Redmi Note 5 comes with a 12MP rear camera while Asus Zenfone Max Pro has a 13MP+5MP dual back camera. The selfie shooter on Note 5 is a 5 MP sensor, while Zenfone Max Pro has an 8MP camera on the front with LED flash.

Redmi Note 5 takes decent pictures in daylight but Asus Zenfone Max Pro takes better pictures. Plus, you can add bokeh effect to your shots as the camera on Zenfone Max Pro has a depth sensor. The edge detection is good and portrait mode pictures look nice.

Zenfone Max Pro can also record 4K videos which is something you cannot do with Redmi Note 5. The video on both phones is a bit shaky.

The front camera on the Zenfone Max Pro has higher resolution but overall performance is more or less the same on both devices.

So overall, Zenfone Max Pro has a better camera performance than Redmi Note 5.

7. Battery and Charging

Batteries on both phones are massive. Redmi Note 5 has a 4000 mAh battery which will last for around 2 days on a single charge. Asus Zenfone Max Pro has an even bigger 5000 mAh battery which will last for around 2-3 days.

For charging, both phones come with a 10W charger which is a bit disappointing. We would have loved a fast charger included in the box. The charging time for Redmi Note 5 is around 2 hours and 15 minutes. While the Asus Zenfone Max Pro takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to completely charge the device.

Zenfone Max Pro packs a bigger battery and is a winner of battery round as well.

8. Multitasking and Gaming

Redmi Note 5 has Snapdragon 625 while the Zenfone Max has more powerful Snapdragon 636. The difference is visible in multitasking and gaming as well where Asus Zenfone Max Pro performs better than Redmi Note 5. Both phones are able to handle multiple apps and games but app launches and switching is faster on the Zenfone Max Pro.

9. Price

Redmi Note 5 is priced at 9999 for the 3-32GB variant and 11999 for the 4-64GB variant. Zenfone Max Pro will cost you 10999 for 3-32GB variant and 4-64GB variant.
