Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro

Xiaomi became the king of budget smartphones around 2 years ago and finally replaced the Samsung to become the #1 smartphone seller in India. Surely, it has revolutionized the budget smartphone segment and pushed other companies to think out of the box to match the price and features Redmi offers.

Redmi Note 5 Pro is a perfect phone for anyone having a budget of under 15k but Asus with the Zenfone Max Pro M1 and a strategic partnership with Flipkart looks to catch the budget smartphone segment which Xiaomi has been enjoying. Both the phones are great and provide high value for money so it is the comparison of best against the best.

Let us now look at point by point details of the comparison of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro.

1. Design

Both Zefnone Max Pro and Note 5 Pro have similar design and build quality. These phones have a metal unibody design with the vertical camera placement at the back. In terms of looks, Max Pro and Note 5 Pro are amazing and you would surely be amazed. They have a strong build quality and would last long easily. This round is a tie.

2. SoC/Processor

Both the smartphones are using a very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset. It is a very powerful chipset which can easily handle multitasking with ease. On the Antutu Benchmark, Asus Zenfone Max Pro scores a little higher at 116000 than the Redmi Note 5 Pro scoring around 110000. So overall, the performance would be breeze and equivalent on both of these budget smartphone. This round is also a tie.

3. Display

Both Note 5 Pro and Zenfone Max Pro M1 come with a  5.99-inch display with Full HD+ resolution and aspect ratio of 18:9. They also have 2.5D gorilla glass protection which adds to the premium look of these phones. On the display quality, the viewing angles and clarity are perfect and both of them look gorgeous. This round will also be a tie

4. RAM & Storage

Redmi Note 5 Pro has 2 variants - 4GB-64 GB and 6GB-64GB and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has been launched in 2 variants: 3GB-32GB and 4GB-64GB. Asus will launch a 6GB-64GB variant after few weeks. Not everyone needs 4GB of RAM or 64GB of storage. Some users have light usage and they are fine with 3GB-32GB variants so Asus has done a good job here by providing plenty of options to users.

5. Software

While most of the things are same in both of these devices, software is where they are miles apart. Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on MIUI 9 which is a heavily customized skin based on Android Nougat. Asus Zenfone Max Pro, on the other hand, comes with stock Android with very little bloatware. Asus has also promised to provide next 2 big Android updates: Android P and Q. So, Zenfone Max Pro is obviously a better option when it comes to software. Pure Android with promised updates is something that every user would love. Asus is a winner here.

6. Camera Comparison

Let's talk about camera comparison of these 2 smartphones. Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 12MP+5MP dual rear camera while Asus Zenfone Max Pro has a 13MP+5MP dual back camera. The selfie shooter on Note 5 Pro is a 20MP sensor, while Zenfone Max Pro has an 8MP camera on the front.

Rear cameras on both phones perform well and take some nice shots in daylight. Portrait mode pictures from both phones look good with clear edges. 20 MP front camera on the Redmi Note 5 Pro is better than the selfie camera on Zenfone Max Pro. Video recorded on Redmi Note 5 Pro looks better because of the stabilization.

Here's a video of camera comparison of these 2 smartphones from Techniqued:

So overall, the camera performance of Redmi Note 5 Pro is a bit better than Asus Zenfone Max Pro. Asus will launch a 6GB RAM variant with upgraded cameras as well so maybe that phone will be able to beat Redmi Note 5 Pro in camera performance.

7. Battery and Charging

Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro do not only carry powerful chipsets and dual cameras, they also have massive batteries as well. Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 4000 mAh battery which will last for 2 days on a single charge. Asus Zenfone Max Pro has an even better 5000 mAh battery which lasts for 2-3 days.

For charging, both phones come with a 10W charger which is a bit disappointing. We would have loved a fast charger included in the box. The charging time for Redmi Note 5 Pro is around 2 hours and 15 minutes. While the Asus Zenfone Max Pro takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to completely charge the device.

Both phones have decent charging times and excellent battery backup so this round is a tie as well.

8. Multitasking and Gaming

Both phones have Snapdragon 636 chipset which packs a lot of power and handles every task really well. If you use a lot of apps or you play a lot of games. Both phones will handle it with ease. Asus Zenfone Max Pro is a bit smoother while switching between apps because of the pure Android. The overall performance of both phones is impressive. If you are a heavy user then go for the 4GB or 6GB RAM version of Zenfone Max Pro as extra RAM will always help in multitasking.

9. Price

Redmi Note 5 Pro is priced at 13999 for the 4GB-64GB variant and 16999 for the 6GB-64GB variant. Asus Zenfone has priced the 3GB-32GB variant at 10999 only and the 4GB-64GB will retail at 12999. The 6GB-64GB variant which will launch later will be priced at 14999 only. So, overall you have to pay Rs. 1000 less for 4GB variant and 2000 less for 6GB variant. It is very surprising and amazing to see a brand providing better value for money than Redmi. Asus is a clear winner in pricing.
