Honor 9 Lite vs Redmi Note 4 Detailed Comparison of Budget Phones
Updated on 2018-01-26 by Geetansh Arora
Honor has been very aggressive in India in last few months. We have seen various phone launches: Honor 9i, Honor 7X, Honor View 10 and now Honor 9 Lite. All these phones have dual camera setup and bezel-less full view display which has been a trend. Redmi Note 4 has been a bestseller for Xiaomi and they claim to have sold more than 25M units which is a crazy number for a smartphone. The latest Honor 9 Lite is priced at 10999 for 3GB-32GB variant and 14999 for 4GB-64GB variant. In this article, we take a look at its comparison with Redmi Note 4 which is selling at around 10999.
Redmi Note 4 comes with a typical metal unibody design with nothing exciting. Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a fresh design. The 9 Lite is covered with glass on both front and back. The back is very reflective and works as a mirror as well. The glass build of Honor 9 Lite makes it slippery but it does look stunning.
The Redmi Note 4 has Snapdragon 625 and the Honor 9 Lite runs on Kirin 659 chipset. Both chipsets are octa cores and have similar performance. Both phones score around 65000 in Antutu benchmarks. Both chipsets handle multitasking and gaming with ease.
Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.5 inch Full HD display with big bezels on front. Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a 5.7 inch 18:9 aspect ratio Full HD+ display with thin bezels. Honor 9 Lite has a larger display but the overall size of the phone is actually smaller than Redmi Note 4. The display on both phones is sharp. Color accuracy is a bit better on Redmi Note 4.
4. RAM & Storage
Redmi Note 4 comes in three variants but right now only the 4GB 64GB variant is available. Honor 9 Lite is available in 2 variants: lower one with 3GB RAM 32GB Storage and a higher one with 4GB 64GB storage. Choices are great for customers so if you don't store a lot of data and don't use a lot of apps then 3GB-32GB variant should be sufficient for you.
Redmi Note 4 runs on MIUI 9 which is a custom skin build on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. Honor 9 Lite runs on EMUI 8 which is a custom skin based on Android Oreo 8.0. Both MIUI and EMUI are somewhat bloated and have some useful customizations as well. Both work well without any lag. EMUI is slightly better when it comes to RAM management and keeping apps in memory. If you open a lot of apps on both phones, you will notice that Honor 9 Lite keeps them open while Redmi Note 4 starts reloading apps because it aggressively kills apps.
6. Camera Comparison
Redmi Note 4 comes with a 13MP primary camera and 5MP front camera. Both cameras are average at best. Pictures look good in outdoor conditions but still lack details. Performance in low light is below average. Redmi phones have always been average in the camera department and Redmi Note 4 is no different.
Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a dual camera setup on both front and back. You can take portrait mode pictures with depth effect from both sides. The camera performance is good. It is not great because color reproduction is not good. Still, it is much better than Redmi Note 4.
In the front camera department, Honor 9 Lite is probably one of the best phones in this segment. The selfies from front camera come out really good. Selfie lovers would definitely like the Honor 9 Lite.
In video recording, both phones don't have any stabilization and videos from both phones are shaky. Moto G5S Plus(See Review) is a much better option if you want a phone to record videos.
7. Battery and Charging
Redmi Note 4 has a 4000 mAh battery and Honor 9 Lite has 3000 mAh battery. Redmi Note 4 offers great battery backup because of its larger battery, efficient chipset and aggressive app killing. With low to medium usage, you can expect 2 days battery backup on a single charge. Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, offers average battery backup. It will last for a day with medium usage.
Both come with a 5V 2amps charger and take around 2.5 hours to fully charge. Honor 9 Lite has a smaller battery but still takes almost same time as Redmi Note 4 to fully charge.
8. Multitasking and Gaming
Both of these phones are in the budget to midrange segment and according to the price point, the overall performance is really good. You can install a ton of apps but you won't notice any lags. The performance is super smooth. Both phones can handle medium and heavy games with ease as well.
Redmi Note 4 4GB-64GB variant was launched at 12999 but after the price cut, it is now available at 10999. Honor 9 Lite is available at 10999 for 3-32GB configuration and 14999 for 4-64GB configuration. We don't know why Honor has kept a 4000 difference in price for just 1GB extra RAM and double storage. So, Redmi Note 4 is much cheaper than Honor 9 Lite. If you are not going to use a lot of apps and games then you should go for Honor 9 Lite 32GB variant.
