Updated on 2018-07-24 by Tejas Upmanyu
We are at the stage of life, where if you blink you might miss out on a new smartphone release and this gets even more intense in the budget segment where there is always cutthroat competition and each week there are new entries - some worth it, more not. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is one of the more active players in the affordable range of devices and Huawei is ready to give you another choice: Honor 9N in a plethora of choices for your next buy in the upper budget range, so before you start scrapping around the Internet word for comparing this new smartphone, we’ve done the effort. Here is our comparison of the upcoming Huawei Honor 9N with Asus Zenfone Max Pro, one of the best sellers of the season.

1. Design & Build
Design and build quality are the first decision pointers whether the smartphone is for you or not. Both the contenders bring a fair design and solid build quality to ensure customer satisfaction.
Huawei Honor 9N sports a routinely rounded corners form factor with a glass back and 2.5D curved glass all over the front, taking it into 2018 - Honor 9N ditches bezels for a notch-complete design with a small bottom bezel with Honor branding emblazoned on It. Camera housing sits at the left top corner with dual sensors and the circular fingerprint sensor is where you like It. The glass all over the smartphone ensures that it gains some smudges and fingerprints all over the day.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro isn’t a bad design either - It sticks with the traditional aluminium body with 2.5D glass at the front, but no glass back, so Its a more robust build but at the same time feels more routine than premium. Also, Asus Zenfone Max Pro is a tad heavier at 180grams compared to Honor 9N’s 152grams. Asus Zenfone Max Pro also says bye to side bezels but the bottom and top bezels sit tight, though reduced. The vertical dual camera set up at the back, accompanied by a circular fingerprint scanner. The design is not extraordinary or new but that doesn’t mean It is bad in any sense.
Honor 9N does feel more compact and convenient to use, compared to Asus Zenfone Max Pro, the reason being the latter’s bigger display and bigger bezels. If we want to pick a winner here - It would be Honor 9N by a slight margin.
Both the smartphones in contention, feature tall IPS displays with Huawei Honor 9N bringing a 5.84-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels, 19:9 ratio at a pixel density of ~432PPI. There is no gorilla glass protection, nonetheless, the display is quite bright and a replete of nice colours, sharpness and good contrast depth. Sunlight readability isn’t all too bad either.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro carries a kinda similar display which is 6-inches in size and has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels at 18:9 ratio turning the pixel density to be ~401 PPI. This again is a decent display with crispiness and colour reproduction at apt levels, we don’t expect a lot in displays from budget offerings but these smartphones do offer niceties for their price.
We find both the displays fairly similar, If it comes to an absolute choice we might give an edge to Honor 9N over Zenfone Max Pro.
3. Internals & Performance
Starting out with things on paper - Huawei Honor 9N - at Its heart has Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 659 which is not so new, but a decent budget grade SoC, which we’ve talked about in the past but for refresher It is an octa-core SoC with 4x2.36 GHz Cortex-A53s for serious performance and 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53s for battery efficient tasks. It is a really decent processor which pumps enough power for day to day usage, It can take on multitasking easily and is coupled with Mali-T830 MP2 for gaming and other graphics-intensive tasks which again is a budget grade GPU, cool for casual gaming and can even do some high-end gaming but does start to show some stutters and lags here and there when put under heavy games for some time. The smartphone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of base storage. Kirin 659 is the same processor seen in Honor 9 Lite, Honor 9i, Honor 7X and the Honor P20 Lite and has been delivering good performance with no complaints from users.
But in the comparison of performance, Asus Zenfone Max Pro is a straight out winner here with much loved Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 at Its core, with Adreno 509 as the GPU. In normal routine tasks, both the smartphones perform similarly but when things start to warm up a little Snapdragon 636 leaves Kirin 659 in the dust. The same translates to graphics performance with Adreno 509 taking a significant lead of Honor 9N’s Mali-T830 MP2. In memory, Asus Zenfone Max Pro is available in 3 variants starting from 3GB RAM and 32GB memory to up to 6GB RAM and 64GB of storage. For number’s sake, Snapdragon 636 outperforms Kirin 659’s 73k points on AnTuTu with a massive 113k points. So performance wise, Honor 9N does good but Asus Zenfone Max Pro does a lot more and a lot better.
It is the age of dual sensors and bokeh shots so thankfully none of the smartphones here miss out on that. Honor 9N features a setup consisting of a primary 13 MP (PDAF) sensor with a secondary 2 MP (depth sensor) primarily for portrait mode and LED flash. The camera is decent given the budget price range and clicks crisp images. The daylight shots are best but we could observe some noise in the low light images.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro packs a primary 13 MP (f/2.2, 25mm, 1.12µm, PDAF) sensor with another 5 MP (f/2.4, 1.12µm, depth sensor) sensor with LED flash. Asus Zenfone Max Pro does better and It takes a small lead in real life performance as well but there is not much of a difference here.
Selfies are observably better on the Honor 9N’s 16MP, f/2.0 front sensor compared to the 8MP, f/2.2 front shooter on Zenfone Max Pro. So in a nutshell, both the smartphones don’t impress us a lot in cameras but that’s how things in the budget space go. In the final verdict of camera comparison - Asus Zenfone Max Pro has a better rear setup while Honor 9N has a stronger selfie game.
Software experience on both of these smartphones has it fair share of differences with Asus Zenfone Max Pro’s ZenUI custom skin leaning more towards stock Android which isn’t remotely true for EMUI 8 on Huawei Honor 9N. Both the smartphone run on Android 8 Oreo underneath their respective skins. While we like the simplicity and neatness of ZenUI, we also do appreciate the abundance of nifty features and add-ons in EMUI. So, this gets a rather subjective debate which must conclude with your preference in terms of mobile software. While you choose the best from the software comparison, you need to know that at the time of luanch, Asus had promised an Android P update to the Asus Zenfone Max Pro, which might not be the case for Honor 9N.
6. Battery, Charging & More
Battery department gets interesting with Asus Zenfone Max Pro being the unarguable winner with a mammoth 5000mAh battery which easily lasts for 2 days, while Huawei Honor 9N get through the day with a 3000mAh battery pack. Now, here’s the catch both of these smartphones lack fast charging support so while Zenfone Max Pro does have a bigger battery, It also takes a significantly more amount of time to charge it compared to Honor 9N. Now, bummer again both the smartphones have MicroUSB ports instead of USB-C.
You do get face unlocking on both the smartphones besides fingerprint scanner. There is no IP rating on either one of them so keeping them safe from liquids is on you. In sound testing, Zenfone Max Pro has a more immersive listening experience and performs quite better than Honor 9N.
If you are looking for a big battery life, Zenfone takes an easy lead in this comparison.
