Honor 9N vs Honor 9 Lite Comparison: Not(ch) a Big Difference
Updated on 2018-08-07 by Tejas Upmanyu
As we’ve seen recently, the competition has transcended the boundaries between two manufacturers, It is now edge to edge and device to device battle, whether it be from different companies or one, and this isn’t hyperbole - pumping too many choices in a very congested budget range often leads to choice paradox resulting in direct competition among devices from the same company. Here we see one of such cases again where the debutant Huawei Honor 9N takes on Huawei Honor 9 Lite. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the detailed comparison of Honor 9N vs Honor 9 Lite.
1. Design & Build Comparison
With Huawei Honor 9N and Huawei Honor 9 Lite, things go pretty hand in hand as both the devices look exactly similar from rear with the same glass draped build, encompassing horizontally aligned dual camera sensors and a fingerprint sensor at the center with Honor branding at the bottom end. On the front, there is a little variation with Honor 9N adopting the notch with a small bottom bezel with Honor branding etched on It while Honor 9 Lite goes without notch with some minor small bezels at the top and bottom.
One visible difference is that the bottom bezel on the Honor 9N is black while it is of the body color on the Honor 9 Lite. Apart from that, the display on the Honor 9N is slightly bigger than the Honor 9 Lite, but overall the Honor 9N looks more compact and ergonomic to use.
Both the devices weigh almost similar but surprisingly Honor 9N is a few grams heavier and 0.1mm thicker if it matters. Both the smartphones are never too full of smudges and fingerprints, all thanks to the glass all over the devices. The presence of glass takes away durability but grants the premium factor to both the devices making them stand apart from other contemporary devices.
Huawei Honor 9N comes with a 5.84 inch, IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels with a 19:9 aspect ratio thanks to the notch, the pixel density turns out to be ~432 PPI, which is great for a budget offering. Honor 9 Lite has an almost identical display minus the notch with a 5.65 inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels at a tall, 18:9 aspect ratio with a ~428 PPI pixel density. As it can be seen on paper, the two displays aren’t exactly different except the size which might be noticeable.
In usage, the displays pack plenty of brightness, good contrast levels, and nice viewing angles. The colors pop out and the picture crispiness makes the experience immersive on these big displays. Again, this round turns out to be a dead rubber but if you are a lover of notch you have your pick in Honor 9N else Honor 9 Lite is equally great.
3. Internals & Performance
We are not too fond of repeating but both Huawei Honor 9N and Honor 9 Lite are run by exact same chipsets at their hearts, with the exact same amount of RAM and base storage. Huawei’s native HiSilicon Kirin 659 runs the business on these smartphones. Kirin 659 is a decent budget grade SoC with octa-core CPU composed of 4x2.36 GHz Cortex-A53s and 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53s. While the higher clocked cores kick in when intense performance is required, the lower clocked cores perform the routine tasks in a power efficient manner.
Kirin 659 also sports Mali T830 MP2 - a capable, entry-level GPU which is cool with all casual gaming but does take a little load on heavy gaming which can get visual at times with stutters. The presence of 4GB of RAM makes multitasking a breeze with rapid switching between apps but switching between heavy apps can take a toll on the system.
In all, the performance is decent and the score of 73k points on AnTuTu explains It, but It is not in league with other contemporary budget champions which run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 or Helio P60.
4. Camera Comparison
So cameras - again, to none of our surprises the specs go same with a primary 13MP sensor and a secondary 2MP depth sensor for portrait tricks. The cameras are decent and while they take good daylight shots, night shots are terrible and expectedly so. The camera performance isn’t quite different from other budget devices and the camera does okay if not bad in most situations. The exposure is good, dynamic range is lost and HDR does good enough for most situations.
Portrait mode is reasonably good but can get a little weird at times, as the background blur can be almost absurd in some photos. On the front, we have 16MP, f/ 2.0 sensor on the Honor 9N and 13MP+2MP dual camera setup on the Honor 9 Lite. Both the sensors are quite similar except the megapixel count, but Honor 9N performs a touch better than Honor 9 Lite in unfavorable conditions.
On the software front, both the devices run on Android 8 Oreo with Huawei’s custom skin - EMUI 8 on top which makes the experience a lot far from stock Android. So, if you love stock this is gonna feel a lot different and can we overwhelming at times. There is still some clutter and bloatware in Huawei’s skins despite refinements over several versions. There are a ton of features in EMUI 8 but it takes an effort to find them and use them seamlessly. Since there are a lot of features, some of them are waste and gimmicky as well.
6. Battery, Charging & More
So both the devices come with exact same batteries - 3000mAh which can be decent enough for a day but not more than that if you are a heavy user. Disappointing for us, there is no fast charging on any of the smartphones. Both the devices, go with MicroUSB instead of USB-C. There is no IP rating for either of the smartphones, so better keep them away from liquids.
7. Pricing & Availability
Huawei Honor 9 Lite has been in the market for some time now with a price tag of ₹ 14,999 for 4GB, 64GB variant on Flipkart.
