Huawei Honor 9N vs Oppo RealMe 1 Detailed Comparison
Updated on 2018-07-24 by Tejas Upmanyu
Huawei Honor 9N is the latest in Huawei’s numerous budget offerings which start low and seer towards the mid-range, we have taken the opportunity to review the Honor 9N which was launched in India on 24th July and how it stacks up with the current best of the arena. In this post, we bring you the comparison of Honor 9N vs Oppo RealMe 1 - one of the big hits from Oppo this season. Without further ado, let’s get started.
1. Design & Build
Let’s start with the design and build of these contenders - Huawei Honor 9N boasts a glass sandwich design with glass at front and back and metal in between. The smartphone has a standard form factor with rounded corners, bezel-less design with a notch at the top and a small bezel at the bottom with Honor branding on It. The glass all over the smartphone makes it feel premium but also makes it more fragile and a centre for fingerprints and smudges. The camera housing with dual sensors sits at the left top corner with a fingerprint scanner at the centre and Honor branding at the bottom end. The design is not so refreshing but feels compact and sturdy in hand, all the signs of a great built.
Talking of Oppo RealMe 1, the smartphone is built of high-grade plastic but nonetheless It is still plastic and takes away the premium factor, the smartphone still feels solid with a big display at the front, minimal side bezels while some can be found at the top and bottom, making the smartphone feel a little bulky and big to use for some in hands. The inclusion of plastic in design keeps the smartphone light, which doesn’t hinder usability or convenience and matches up with the weight of Huawei Honor 9N, despite the latter having a smaller build.
The diamond black shade of Oppo RealMe 1 stands out with the diamond cut pattern at the back which is new and looks great. When It comes to design, Oppo RealMe 1 is more a rectangular bar than Huawei Honor 9N with curved corners. A single camera sensor at the back followed by RealMe banding, nothing out of ordinary except you get a little shock that why this smartphone has a single sensor in the age of dual sensors? We’ll talk about it in the camera section. Dor the design comparison of Honor 9N and Oppo Realme 1, we feel Huawei Honor 9N has a more modern and premium design but Oppo RealMe 1 goes more practical and sturdy.
Huawei Honor 9N has a 5.84-inch IPS LCD panel with 1080 x 2280 pixels of resolution, 19:9 ratio (~432 PPI) which looks really good and the display carries ample brightness with nice, crisp colours. The contrast levels and sharpness are right up there making this overall a satisfying and immersive viewing experience. Oppo RealMe 1, on the other hand, bears a 6-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels at an 18:9 aspect ratio with ~402 PPI pixel density. This again is a standout display with plenty of brightness, deep contrast levels and good sunlight readability.
The two displays are great for the price, RealMe 1’s being a little bigger than Honor 9N’s there is not much difference to discuss here. Pick any one and you’ll love It. The display comparison round stands tied.
3. Internals & Performance
Let us talk about the stuffing and discover which of the Honor 9N or Oppo Realme 1 looks better in the performance comparison.
Huawei Honor 9N packs Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 659 with 4GB of RAM in the base model, Kirin 659 is a decent budget offering, with Mali-T830 MP2 as GPU. Kirin 659 is an octa-core SoC with 4x2.36 GHz Cortex-A53 cores and 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. The setup is a decent one, with 73k points on the AnTuTu but being decent doesn’t mean the best.
Contemporary smartphones run on Snapdragon 636, which leaves Kirin 659 in the dust quite easily. Here though, we don’t have Snapdragon 636 as competition - what we have is an even more formidable competitor in form of MediaTek Helio P60 with an octa-core 4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A73 cores and 4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 cores with Mali-G72 MP3 as GPU with 1,22,000 points on the AnTuTu. While the GPU performance is better but not immensely noticeable, CPU performance is where Helio P60 trumps everyone else, even the Snapdragon 636. In real life usage, the real power of Helio P20 comes when we put it under a lot of heavy games and apps, with fast switching and multitasking.
Kirin 659 gets a little shaky, under pressure. Gaming is quite smooth on both the smartphones but some stutters can be observed on Honor 9N when playing heavy games for longer durations.

It is 2018 and since we expect dual sensors, Oppo RealMe 1 has focussed to provide more of processing power and given less preference to the camera hence brings a little shock with a single sensor. It’s not much of a disappointment though and before you make your mind, read below the camera comparison of Honor 9N and Oppo Realme 1 and what all the single sensor is capable of. After all, the Oppo Realme 1 is the most successful smartphone from Oppo in the budget segment phone.
Huawei Honor 9N has a dual sensor with primary 13 MP (PDAF) sensor with a secondary 2 MP (depth sensor) for bokeh shots and LED flash. While Oppo RealMe1 shows confidence on a single primary 13 MP (f/2.2), PDAF, LED flash. The camera has no dearth of capabilities though, It takes great photos in daylight and does average in the night like other budget smartphones. It also takes in some nice portrait photos, with emphasis on some, as It is software based bokeh, there are compromises very few times but the job well almost all the time.
In early impressions, we see Huawei Honor 9N do great in photos with Oppo RealMe1 closely following It. Exposure and white balance on Honor 9N is better than Oppo RealMe 1. But if you are out to pick a camera, there is not much of a staggering difference between the two. For selfies, we have an 8MP sensor for the Realme 1 and 16MP sensor for Honor 9N, and Honor 9N does a pretty decent job from the front camera. So, in a nutshell, both the cameras stand out as almost equals with Huawei Honor 9N doing a touch better.
Coming to software, both the smartphones running on Android 8.0 Oreo under their respective custom skins, which is ColorOS 5.0 on the RealMe1 and EMUI 8 on the Honor 9N. It is fair to say that none of these is close to stock Android and there are fair shares of clutter on both. EMUI appears to be more refined and mature compared to ColorOS which still reminds some of older iOS versions. With a hefty set of features baked into both the skins, there is no real competition here except the one for your preference. So the software comparison round also stands at the tie.
Both the smartphone supports face unlocking but only the Honor 9N supports fingerprint unlocking. Oppo Realme 1 does not support fingerprint unlocking.
6. Battery, Charging & More
Huawei Honor 9N debuts with a 3000mAh battery which is not par with today’s expectations of larger batteries but is quite enough for a day’s use. Oppo RealMe1 comes with a slightly bigger 3410mAh battery which can easily take you through the day. There is no fast charging on either so, you can be disappointed with both of them. Both of the smartphones feature MicroUSB ports instead of the new USB-C as well, which is again a bummer. Moreover, there is no IP rating on either of the smartphones so keeping them safe from water is on you.
7. Price & Availability
So, pricing is one of the more pronounced factors when it comes to the budget range - that’s why it is a budget range. Huawei Honor 9N launched in India on 24th July exclusively on the Flipkart priced at Rs 13999 for the 4GB-64GB variant.
