MI A1 was one of the first budget smartphones from Redmi with a dual rear camera crafted in partnership with Google under the Android One tag, while Redmi 5 Plus is one of the first smartphones from Redmi to have a bezel-less display in the budget segment.

Redmi 5 Plus has a 5.99-inch Full HD+ bezel-less display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and 1080p resolution, while, Mi A1 has a 5.5 Full HD display with a resolution of 1080p. Redmi 5 Plus wins over Mi A1 in both looks and display.
2. SOC/Processor Comparison
Both the phones Redmi 5 Plus and Mi A1 are powered by Snapdragon 625. The experience might be somewhat better on Mi A1 because of Stock Android and clean UI.

Redmi 5 Plus comes in two variants 3GB of RAM with 32GB internal storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage while Mi A1 comes in a single variant of 4GB of RAM with 64 GB of internal storage.

4. Software Comparison
Mi A1 was launched under the tag of Android One with Stock Android so there is no bloatware and cleanest UI. Redmi 5 comes with MIUI 9 that runs on Android 7.1.2 (Nougat). Mi A1 is better here as stock android has the best optimizations and is very smooth compared to MIUI which has bloatware and slows down the experience.
