1. Design & Display

Redmi 5 follows the latest trend and holds a 5.7-inch HD+ bezel-less display with a resolution of 720p, Redmi Y1, the previously launched phone has a 5.5 inch HD display with similar 720p resolution. So the Redmi 5 does better here compared to Redmi 5.

The build quality of the phones is similar.

2. SOC/Processor Comparison

Redmi 5 is powered by Snapdragon 450 which has an Antutu Benchmark score of approx 55000 which is around 20-25 % improvement over Snapdragon 435 seen in Redmi Y1 which has an Antutu score of around 44000. So Redmi 5 will perform better than Redmi Y1.

3. RAM & Storage Comparison

Redmi 5 comes with two variants having 2GB and 3GB of RAM with respective internal memory at 16GB and 64GB. While Redmi Y1 was two higher variants, 3GB of RAM with 32GB on internal memory and 4GB of RAM with 64 GB of internal memory. Whichever phone suits better as per your need, we would suggest going for the higher variant phone.

4. Software Comparison

Both the phones run on MIUI 9 over the Android 7.1.2(Nougat). MIUI is not the best UI in the market because it's not properly optimized though MIUI 9 has seen some improvements over the previous versions.

Redmi 5 comes with a rear camera of 12MP and front camera of 5MP, on the other hand, Redmi Y1 has 13MP as the rear camera sensor and 16MP as the front camera sensor. The performance of the rear camera is similar in both the phones while the front camera is the USP of Redmi Y1 and is certainly much better than the front camera in Redmi 5.
