Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi A1 Comparison

Xiaomi has become the budget king in India. Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4, Mi A1: All phones have been best sellers in India in 2017. Now Xiaomi has launched the most awaited Redmi Note 5 Pro. Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 6-inch bezel-less display and dual camera at the back and 20MP selfie camera at the front. It is priced at 13999 for 4-64GB variant and 16999 for 6-64GB variant.

There's one more Xiaomi phone available at the same price: The Mi A1. Mi A1 has been very popular in India because of its great dual camera performance. Priced at under 15000, it offers great value for money.

In this article, we take a look at the comparison of Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi A1.

1. Design

Redmi Note 5 Pro has a design similar to Redmi Note 4. The camera placement on the back looks like iPhone X. The phone looks good overall but doesn't have any special. Mi A1 on the other hand has a design similar or you can say an exact copy of iPhone 7 Plus.

Both phones look decent but there is nothing special about them. So this round is a tie.

2. SoC/Processor

The Redmi Note 5 Pro has Snapdragon 636 chipset which is the latest midrange chipset from Qualcomm. It is very powerful and scores around 110000 on Antutu benchmarks. This is 80% higher than what we saw on Redmi Note 4.

The Mi A1 runs on Snapdragon 625 which is an older midrange chipset but still a decent performer. It scores around 65000 on Antutu benchmarks.

Redmi Note 5 Pro is far better than Mi A1 in processing power and wins processor round.

3. Display

Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with 18:9 aspect ratio displays which have been a trend. The display size s 5.99 inches. Even with the large display, the overall size of the phone is similar to other 5.5 inch devices. Mi A1, on the other hand, comes with the older 16:9 aspect ratio. The display size is standard 5.5 inch.

Both displays are sharp and have a good color reproduction. We like Redmi Note 5 Pro more because of it's larger display and latest 18:9 aspect ratio.

4. RAM & Storage

Redmi Note 5 Pro comes in 2 variants: 4GB-64GB and 6GB-64GB.

Mi A1 also comes in just 1 variant which is 4GB-64GB.

5. Software

Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on MIUI 9 which is a custom skin based on Android Nougat. Mi A1 runs on stock android and has recently recieved update of Android Oreo 8.0. Mi A1 is our choice in software because of stock android.

6. Camera Comparison

On the back, both cameras have a dual camera setup. Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 12+5MP dual camera setup and Mi A1 comes with a 12+12MP dual camera setup. Both cameras perform really well. The 5MP sensor on Note 5 Pro is a depth sensor while the secondary 12MP sensor on Mi A1 is a telephoto lens which enables 2X zoom without losing image quality.

On the front, Mi A1 has a single 5MP camera setup and Redmi Note 5 Pro also has a single 20MP camera. Note 5 Pro has a front selfie camera flash as well which is missing on Mi A1. Selfies with Redmi Note 5 Pro are much better than selfies taken with Mi A1. So selfie loves should go with Redmi Note 5 Pro.

In video recording, Redmi Note 5 Pro is better because it has electronic stabilization which works well. Videos with Mi A1 are shaky and don't look good.

Here's the comparison:

7. Battery and Charging

Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 4000 mAh battery and Mi A1 has 3080 mAh battery. Redmi Note 5 Pro is far better in battery backup than Mi A1. You can get almost 2 days of backup on Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi A1 will last for a day or day and a half at best.

Both come with a 5V 2amps charger and take around 2-2.5 hours to fully charge.

So Redmi Note 5 Pro wins the battery and charging round because of its awesome battery backup.

8. Multitasking and Gaming

Redmi Note 5 Pro because of its powerful Snapdragon 636 chipset outperforms the Mi A1 in multitasking and gaming. Redmi Note 5 Pro is probably the most powerful smartphone in under 15000 categories. If you are going to use your phone for using a ton of apps or games, go for Redmi Note 5 Pro. Mi A1 performance is decent but it is not as good as that of Redmi Note 5 Pro.

9. Price

Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with 4-64GB configuration and is available at 13999 in India. The 6GB-64G variant would come later at 16999.

Mi A1 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and is available at 13999.

So both phones offer same memory and storage at the same price.
