Redmi Note 7 vs Realme 3 Comparison

Xiaomi is at the top of the Indian smartphone market and their budget phones have played a major role in helping them get there. With its 7th generation of Redmi Note series, it plans to keep a big chunk of the budget segment. However, the latest offerings from Samsung’s M series do hold a possible threat to this. Samsung lost the top spot last year and is trying to regain that spot since then.

There however happens to be another company rather a sub-brand turned company is also planning in stealing the thunder that Xiaomi has built over the years. We are talking about the Realme which used to be a sub-brand of Oppo and now functions as a standalone company. The Realme 3 is a potential player and a major competition to Note 7. Only one would emerge as the budget king in today’s comparison of Redmi Note 7 vs Realme 3.  Read to find out how do these 2 phones fair in this comparison today.

So, to make this comparison going nice and easy we have divided it into:

1.     Internals and Performance
2.     Design and Build quality
3.     Display
4.     Battery
5.     Software
6.     Camera
7.     Price

So, let's start with the comparison of internal hardware and performance.

Hardware and Performance:

A few years back the under 11 to 12K smartphone budget could only get you a 400 series smartphone or a really bad MediaTek processor. However, this is 2019 and things have changed drastically.
The Redmi Note 7 brings with itself the Snapdragon 660. This, however, is not the underclocked variant like used in the Pro M2 by Asus. In fact, it is the full-fledged 660 and Xiaomi is pretty proud of.

They should be as this is the cheapest full-fledged 660 that is available under 10K. Now that said the underclocked 660 in itself is a great performance and the full-fledged 660 is basically a category champ. Powered by the Kryo 260 architecture with this we get a 14nm processed processor. The 660 has a combination of 4 Cortex-A53 and 4 Cortex-A73 processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with maximum turbo boost till 2.2 GHz. If that is not enough then the GPU powering the 660 will definitely seal the deal. The GPU in talks is the Adreno 512 and games like PUBG play like a champ with settings set to medium.

This, however, is not to say that the P70 used in the Realme 3 is totally waste in-fact it is actually more energy efficient than the 660. The P70 is built on the 12nm process. It loses to the 660 in Note 7 by a very small margin. Day to day task will be just as smooth as it will be on the 660. It's only when you push it to its limit will it slightly start flexing.

However, the only place where the 660 wins is the GPU. Now don’t get us wrong guys the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU on the P70 is slightly better than the Adreno 512 on the lower clocked 660. However, when the Adreno 512 is paired with the full variant of the 660, games just become more playable on the Note 7. If you are interested in going deep, take a look at our article on Snapdragon 660 vs 675 vs Helio P70.

Winner: Redmi Note 7

Design and Build Quality:

Now lets first clear out the similarities between the 2 phones. That would be great rounded corners giving great ergonomic feel in the hand. The other common feature being the beautiful gradient back.

And that’s all that is in common. That’s because the Note 7 doesn’t cheap out like the Realme 3 by using glossy plastic giving it a fake glass look. As a matter of fact, the Note 7 uses Gorilla glass 5 not only on its display upfront but also at the back giving it an edge over the Realme 3. This gives the Note 7 a premium feel and material choice that was never seen or experienced a phone which is under the 10K mark. Both the phones have a fingerprint sensor to the back and it works fine.

The Realme 3 hits the Note 7 with support for 2 sim card slots and a separate memory card slot, unlike the Note 7’s hybrid sim slot. The Note 7 strikes back with a Type C port and an IR blaster to control home Electronics.

Like we said that the Realme 3 is not a bad feeling phone in the hand. However, when we consider the overall protection and premium feel that the Note 7 comes with, we just can’t overlook this.

Winner: Redmi Note 7

Display Comparison:

The Note 7 has a Full HD+ display and has a Gorilla glass 5 on top of it. FHD+ resolution of 2340X1080p gives it a total of 409ppi. This is just not matched by the Realme 3 display which tops out only at an HD+ giving it a resolution of only 1520X720 pixels.

The display on the Note 7 is more vibrant colorful and overall a joy to watch when considering the price point. This is not to say that the display on the Realme 3 is bad or anything. It is just this that it just does not compare to the great one on the Note 7.

Winner: Redmi Note 7

Battery and Charging:

Now with the Note 7 winning on 3 straight rows is there a room for the Realme 3? The answer with good news is yes.

Note 7 comes with a 4000mAh battery is great for all-day performance. However, the Realme 3 comes with an incremental 230mAh increased 4230mAh battery. Now, at first sight, this might not seem a lot and to an extent it is true. However, when you couple it to the HD+ screen and the 12nm HelioP70 the battery life that the Realme 3 delivers is way better than the Note 7.

However, the Note 7 strikes back with support for Quick charge 4. But this alone cannot declare the Note 7 winner.  Both phones come with a 5V 2A 10W charger so there's still some time before we start seeing fast chargers inside the box of budget phones.

Winner: Realme 3

To get this easier to understand, both the phones run on the latest variants of Android that is Android 9 Pie. And that’s pretty much it because both the phones run a proprietary skin on top of Pie. The Redmi Note 7 runs on the much popular MIUI and this time around its MIUI 10. Whereas, Realme 3 runs on Color OS 6 on top of Android 9.

Now both these skins are extremely stable and daily driver material. Day to day performance is great and there are no major hiccups when it comes to performance. However, lately, Xiaomi has adopted this disgusting habit of pushing adds into every nook and corner of the OS. Right from the inbuilt apps to the settings menu. Seriously Xiaomi?

Based on that alone this round goes to the Realme 3 as it does not trouble its users with such annoying aspects that cannot even be termed as features.

Winner: Realme 3

Now coming to probably the most awaited comparison. The glorified cameras. Let’s clear the specs first and then dive into the actual comparison.

The Redmi Note 7 comes with a 12MP F2.2 AI camera with a pixel size of 1.25 micron, this is assisted with a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, it is assisted by a 13MP selfie shooter. On the Realme 3 side of things, we have a 13MP F1.8 1.12-micron lens which is again assisted by a 2MP depth sensor. With a 13MP selfie shooter on the front.

Now on paper the Realme 3 sensor kind of wins. But is history has taught has anything it is this that theoretical value doesn’t tell the entire story. The primary 12MP on the Note 7 is capable of shooting pictures with AI mode detecting up to 33 scenes, HDR imaging while shooting slow-mo videos at 120 fps is available for both 720p and 1080p videos. It is also able to record video at 1080p 60 and 30 fps. However, it is to be noted that the Note 7 support EIS for videos at 1080p 30fps.

The camera on the Realme 3 wins only on paper. This is not to say that is a bad performer. This is because the camera kind of seems chocked by the decisions made by Realme. This is because both the Helio P70 and the camera hardware on the Realme 3 is capable of shooting great pictures. However, when compared with the Note 7 the resulting images have noise and fewer details.

However, the Realme 3 is able to pick up many vibrant colors when the chroma boost mode is turned on. Even the nightscape mode on the Realme 3 is able to pull more details than the Note 7.
But we need to decide upon a winner. Sadly, this round goes to Note 7 as it provides way more pros than the cons that the Realme 3 provides.

Winner: Redmi Note 7

So, we have been rattling about price from a very long time. This is because of the amount of tech that these 2 phones bring to you at an extremely affordable price.

The 3GB RAM and 32GB internal of the Realme 3 comes at a jaw-dropping 8999 rupees while  The 4GB RAM and 64GB internal comes for rupees 10999. The Redmi Note 7, on the other hand, comes at rupees 9999 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB internal variant and rupees 11999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB.
