Redmi Y2 vs Honor 9 Lite: Comparison of Budget Dual Camera Phones
Updated on 2018-06-08 by Geetansh Arora
Honor launched the Honor 9 Lite back in January as a premium looking budget smartphone with all latest features like 18:9 bezel-less display, dual camera on the front and back and glass build. Honor 9 Lite has performed well and is one of the bestsellers on Flipkart. It is rated 4.3 stars out of 5 by more than 200k buyers on Flipkart.
Xiaomi already has a ton of smartphones in budget segment and they have launched another one: Redmi Y2. It is the successor of last years Redmi Y1 which was launched as a selfie smartphone. The Y2 packs significant improvements in terms of camera, processor, and display. If you are thinking which one is better and which one you should buy then this article will help you out.
Both Redmi Y2 and Honor 9 Lite are priced around Rs. 10000 and 15000 in India. Both of the smartphones have a special focus on the camera performance. Let's take a look at their detailed comparison. We will go through various points like design, processor, performance, camera, battery backup, charging, pricing and more.
Redmi Y2 design is similar to other Xiaomi smartphones and might look a bit boring to some(including us). There's the same metal unibody design with curved edges and the dual camera on the back is placed vertically on the edge with fingerprint sensor at the center. The device looks very similar to Redmi Note 5 Pro. The build of the device is great and feels solid.
Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a nice fresh design. The 9 Lite is covered with glass on both front and back. The back is very reflective and can be used as a mirror as well. All 3 colors: Blue, Grey, and Black look stunning. The phone is lightweight and easy to use. Glass build makes it a bit slippery though.
Honor 9 Lite wins the design round.
The Redmi Y2 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset which is there on Redmi Note 4 and Note 5 as well. The processor has decent amount of power and performs well in multitasking and gaming. It scores around 70000 on Antutu Benchmarks.
The Honor 9 Lite is powered by their own Kirin 659 chipset. Kirini 659 is similar to Snapdragon 625. It also scores around 65000-70000 in Antutu benchmarks. Multitasking and gaming is smooth here as well. So this round is a tie.
Both smartphones come with the latest 18:9 aspect ratio tall displays. The display on the Redmi Y2 is of 5.99 inches size and has HD+ resolution. The display on the Honor 9 Lite is a bit smaller at 5.7 inches but has a Full HD+ resolution. Both displays look good overall.
4. RAM & Storage
Both Redmi Y2 and Honor 9 Lite come in 2 variants: 3GB RAM 32GB Storage and 4GB RAM 64GB Storage. So no differences here.
Redmi Y2 runs on MIUI 9.5 which is a custom skin based on the Android Orea 8.1. Honor 9 Lite runs on EMUI 8 which is again a custom skin based on Android Oreo as well. Both skins are heavily customized and come with some bloatware as well. Both have some useful features like dual apps etc. If you are into stock android then you are not going to like any of them.
6. Camera Comparison
On the rear, both phones have a dual camera setup. Redmi Y2 comes with a 12+5MP dual camera setup and Honor 9 Lite comes with a 13+2MP dual camera setup. Overall performance of Redmi Y2 camera is better than Honor 9 Lite's camera. Pictures look good overall on both phones, it is just that Y2 works a bit better in detecting edges in portrait mode pictures and color reproduction is better as well.
On the front, Honor 9 Lite has a 13+2MP dual camera setup and Redmi Note Y2 has a single 16MP camera. Redmi Y2 also has a front selfie camera flash as well which is not there on Honor 9 Lite. Selfie camera performance is great on both phones. Here Honor 9 Lite is a bit better in detecting edges in portrait mode as it has a dual camera setup.
For video recording, the Redmi Y2 is a better option because it has electronic image stabilization (EIS). Honor 9 Lite doesn't have any stabilization so videos are shaky.
So, overall Redmi Y2 is little better than Honor 9 Lite in camera performance.
7. Battery and Charging
Redmi Y2 has a 3080 mAh battery and Honor 9 Lite has 3000 mAh battery. The display size of Y2 is 6 inches but the resolution is 720p and display size of 9 Lite is 5.7 inches and resolution is 1080p. Both have processors which are power efficient so you can expect a day of backup from both phones.
Both phones come with a 5V 2A charger. Honor 9 Lite takes 2.5 to 3 hours to fully charge while the Redmi Y2 will fully charge in around 2 hours or so. Charging on 9 Lite is slow so Y2 is a better option here.
8. Multitasking and Gaming
As we discussed above, both smartphones have similar configurations and processor performance is also similar and that reflects in gaming and multitasking. Both phones do a reasonably good job with medium to heavy games. Multitasking is a breeze on both phones. If you are a heavy user, go for the higher variant.
Honor 9 Lite was launched at 10999 for 3GB 32GB and 14999 for 4GB 64GB. The pricing hasn't changed since. We still feel the 4GB 64GB is overpriced by around 1500-2000 Rs.
The latest Redmi Y2 is priced at 9999 for the 3GB 32GB variant and 12999 for the 4GB 64GB variant. So price wise, Redmi Y2 is a better option.
