Brief Review:

Redmi started focusing on the smartphone with better capabilities of shooting selfies with the Y series of smartphone in late 2017. Well, this year sees the 3rd iteration in that lineup. Today we look into the Redmi Y3. The Redmi Y3 brings along with itself huge improvements from the past but does it beat the competition? However, this lineup has been very confusing as it ends up competing with its own siblings. Namely the Note and the conventional Redmi lineup.

Redmi’s fancy way of saying gradient back or Aura prism design has crept down to the Y3. The back of the device is an Aura prism design but is a plastic material that pretends to be glass. The device has a fingerprint sensor at the back with the dual camera single LED setup on the top left corner of the phone. When you turn the device over you have the power and volume keys to the right. secondary microphone, IR blaster and a 3.5mm headphone jack to the top. On the left, we have a SIM card slot which also houses a dedicated memory card slot which can be expanded up to 512GB. Finally, we have the primary microphone the MicroUSB port and the speaker grill to the bottom. It is weird as the similarly priced Note 7 base model has a Type C port. The phone comes in 3 colors as listed on the official website of India. They are Prism black, Elegant Blue and Bold Red. The phone is designed well and looks nice overall.

Up next we have the display of the device. This is one area where Redmi has completely cheaped out. The reason being that the Y3 has an HD+, yes, a 1520x720p U-notched display. Well, it does give users an 86.83% screen to body ratio and 450 nits of peak brightness. Now the display is not bad however again the similar priced Note 7 has an FHD+ panel. In fact the much cheaper Redmi 7 shares the exact same display from the Y3. The good news is this that the Y3 gets a Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Apart from this, there is nothing special in the display department at least.

Following the display, we have the battery life of the phone. This is at least one place where Redmi didn’t cheap out as the Y3 comes with a massive 4000 mAh battery. Now the good news is this that thanks to the low-res display and the comparatively low-powered processor, more on this later the Y3 gets great battery life.  Now there is no doubt that the phone has a great battery life and the capacity in- itself is huge but. This becomes disappointing when we realize that the cheaper Redmi & has the same battery capacity. The charger that comes in the box is a standard one as it's rated at 10W. All I all the battery department is kind of a mixed bag.

Now we come to the main focus of the phone. The camera, rather cameras. The Y3 in total has 3 cameras. 2 to the rear and 1 to the front. The rear camera is a setup of a primary 12MP F2.2 and 2MP depth sensor. The primary sensor is nothing out of the blue. It takes decent shots and features most of the features seen on similarly priced phones. Now what’s amazing is in the camera up front. The Y3 features a whopping 32MP selfie shooter with AI capabilities. The Ai capability enables the Y3 for better Face unlock than most of its competitors. The pictures taken are a result of the Y3’s Ai integration. With features like AI beautify 4.0, AI portrait and low-light shots. The selfie shooter also features an 80o field of view to accommodate more people oi the frame. Redmi makes sure you get the best of results for the price that you invest in this phone. All in all, the Y3 delivers when it comes to selfies.

Last but not least we come to the performance of the device. At the heart of the phone resides Snapdragon 632 from Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 632 is the successor to the Snapdragon 630 and scores around 103000 on AnTuTu benchmark. Based on the 14nm manufacturing process and Kryo 250 cores the 632 is clocked at 1.8ghz. Now to be very honest this is not a heavy workload lifting processor but in the same context, it won’t slow you down either. The GPU again is the very old Adreno 506. The Y3 with the Snapdragon 632 comes coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage. Day to day task with light usage should be fine. However, this is a phone on which you will not be able to play the most demanding games of multitasking like a champ due to the low capacity of the RAM. The only disappointment is this that the similarly priced Note 7 comes with a much, much powerful Snapdragon 660.

Now we all know that hardware alone is not the driver of a phone and the software that binds the Redmi Y3 is MIUI 10 atop Android 9 Pie. MIUI is s pretty heavy UI and it not for everyone as it’s a major departure from stock android. However, it’s not to say this that it's bad or anything. It's just this that the phone would have felt a lot faster if stock Android were used. All in all, for what the phone is priced at the processor at the very least could have been better.

So, before we wrap everything up, let’s talk about the pricing. The Redmi Y3 comes in one model only that is the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and is priced at Rs. 9999. Now Redmi markets this phone for selfie lovers and this truly is a phone for that very audience. If you want the bets selfie-taking smartphone at this price range that also has great battery life, look nowhere else buy this phone.

Redmi Y3 is a decent phone but not the best in this price range. Go for it if you need a great selfie phone from Xiaomi. Otherwise, there are better options like Redmi Note 7 which costs same and comes with a better processor and display. Realme U1 and Realme 3 are two great options from Realme. U1 comes with Helio P70 chipset and has a nice 25MP selfie camera as well.

Brief Review:

The Redmi Note series has always been the midrange budget smartphone killer pretty much forever. Companies like Samsung and Realme are trying hard to beat Redmi at their own game. Samsung M20 and Realme 2 Pro have clocked good sales numbers in last few months and Realme has now launched the successor of Realme 2 Pro: Realme 3 Pro. The phone comes with the powerful midrange Snapdragon 710 processor, 16MP flagship camera sensor, big battery, and VOOC fast charging. Let's dive into the details of what Realme 3 Pro offers and should you buy it?

2019 is the year of surprise, especially for budget smartphones. Till date, the only phones that were a glass and glass design were flagship phones. Redmi changed this by using Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and 5 on the back this year. Realme 3 Pro also comes with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front reflective gradient design on the back which looks gorgeous. The power button is on the right, volume rockers on the left with a dual sim and MicroSD slot. Finally, the headphone jack, primary microphone, micro USB port sadly and the speaker grill reside at the bottom. There is a fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone slightly above the mid-section of the phone for biometric authentication. All in all, Realme has completely nailed it with the design language the only gripe is the presence of a MicroUSB port instead of a Type C one. But the port is all not that bad as it comes with a feature to make up for its Type C absence will get on that later on in the battery section.

We have said this once and we’ll say it again that the display of any smartphone is the prime user interface. Thankfully Realme 3 pro come with a great display. With a 90.8% screen to body ratio and a huge 6.3-inch dew-drop notch LCD display topping at FHD+ 2340x1080 pixels making it a great media consumption device. Not only this but the display also gets pretty bright at a peak of 400 nits while some of the competition reaches only about 350 nits. Colors are natural and vivid Realme has done a pretty good job this time around.

Now, battery life is probably the 2nd most important feature on this phone. The first being the processor, more on that later. This is because Realme has packed a massive 4045 mAh battery which will easily give you a one plus day of backup. Not only did Realme stop here but also enabled it with their trademark VOOC charge 3.0. what does that mean now? Well in plain terms VOOC 3.0 output 5V at 4A delivering a massive 20W of charge. This coupled with the AI capabilities of the phone tops up the Realme 3 pro up to 50% on just 30 minutes. The lack of the Type C port is thus somewhat made up with this. The better new the VOOC charger comes bundled in the box. Good job Realme, please keep this up in the future too.

Realme has really learned from the mistakes of its past with the camera department that is from the Realme 3. This time around they focused on giving users not only better camera sensors but also software gimmicks that are actually useful. The rear cameras are a marriage of a 16MP F1.7 IMX519 primary shooter from Sony coupled with a 5MP F2.4 depth shooter. The interesting thing about this camera is that OnePlus 6T is also using the same 16MP camera sensor. This results in great pictures as the primary lens use pixel binning technology giving the users massive 1.22-micrometer large pixels. Users can now shoot 64MP UHD photos with the help of this. Pictures taken from the rear camera definitely come out clear and vivid. The low aperture of F1.7 also allows for better low light shooting too. The front camera is no slouch either. It’s a 25MP F2.0 shooter and it does its job considering the price range of the phone. Selfies will definitely be detailed and rich due to the higher megapixel count.

Remember when we said that the battery is the 2nd most important feature as the 1st place is taken up by the processor. The Realme 3 pro has the Snapdragon 710 at its heart running the whole show. This is the very first time any phone under the 15K price range has used the 710. The Snapdragon 710 has is an octa-core processor that has 2 A-75’s and 6 A-55’s. Running at 2.2 GHz and based on the 10nm architecture this is not only a powerful processor but also a power efficient one. Realme has even gone ahead and optimized the Realme 3 pro for games like PUBG, Rules of Survival and Asphalt 9. This is done by taking advantage of the very powerful GPU the Adreno 616 that lies embedded in the 710. Day to day task is a breeze and games can be played at the highest settings to. This is also partially due to the use of Hyperboost 2.0 which color OS brings to the table which optimizes game stability by 38%. This smartphone scores around 150000 on the AnTuTu benchmark.

Staying on software fronts of performance Realme 3 pro comes with Android 9 Pie on top of ColorOS 6.0. Now color OS is definitely not the best custom OS for phones out there. There are too many animations that clutter on the performance of the Snapdragon 710. Maybe when in the future of at all if ColorOS 7 is able to streamline animations the full potential of the 710 is released.

Overall the phone is quite zippy due to the higher clock speed of the 710 and the presence of a monster GPU in the form of the Adreno 616. All in all, this is definitely a great daily driver material and a good gaming phone as well.

Now to sum things up there are only a few points to be bough to the limelight. The package that Realme has provided here is simply mind-blowing especially for the price that the phone is being offered for. The 4GB 64GB variant of the phone comes for Rs.13999 while the 6GB 64GB is priced at 15999 and the 6GB.128 variant comes for Rs 16999. The only eyesore feature would probably be the use of a micro USB port instead of a Type C one. However, it makes up with the inclusion of VOOC fast charging. But considering the fact, the amount of tech Realme has packed this actually in a really long time gives the Redmi Note especially the Note 7 Pro a huge run for its money. Realme 3 Pro does not have an IP rating which is something no one can expect from a phone under 15000 but the phone is splash proof. Realme 3 Pro is a solid performer and deserves a spot on our list of best camera phones under 15k.

Brief Review:

Samsung had mainly focused its sale for its flagships. However, we saw a steep change in both its offering and strategy with their mobile sales when the M series arrived that provided huge value for the buck that you spent. Samsung has been offering phones in their A series since 2014. The A series mainly focus on offering some of the features that are seen in only the upper flagship models. This makes the A series an upper mid-range offering. The 2019 A series aims at hitting the perfect balance between price and features.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy M30, this Galaxy A30 features more or less the same plastic back but a perfectly polished to give it a glass look. This is not necessarily a bad thing as it provides great ergonomics for the users to hold their device, It has the same Infinity-U notched Super AMOLED display which is 6.4 inch at FHD+ resolution. The total resolution is 2340 x 1080 pixels giving the A30 an overall 400+ ppi of density. What this basically converts to great media consumption with rich and punchy colors.

Coming to what is powering this Galaxy A30, we again have the same in-house built Exynos 7904 from Samsung. And this processor has proven its ground as a very capable contender as it was used before in the M20 and M30 too. There is really not much to complain about the performance side all thanks to the Exynos 7904. The Exynos 7904 is not the best processor available at this price range but however gets the job done. It is basically is a combination of 2 cortex A-73 clocked at 1.8 GHz. and 6 cortex A-53 clocked at 1.6 GHz. This phone has an AnTuTu score of 1,08,000. This is not the absolute best but like we said it gets the job done.

There is a 4GB RAM and 64 GB storage available on the phone which has a dedicated SD card slot to expand the memory to 512 GB with proper dual sim usage.

Let us now go to the camera review of Galaxy A30, It has a primary rear camera with a 16MP F1.7 lens and 5MP F2.2 ultra-wide lens and that’s it. The selfie camera upfront is a 16MP f2.0 sensor. The camera captures clear and sharp images with good contrast and color reproduction. The camera has been a strong department for Samsung always and it goes on well with this phone. The low light shots also have good details and the portrait shots are spot on in detecting the edges and blurring the background very well. Additionally, you get the capability to click ultra wide shots. Overall the camera works great and you will be able to capture good crisp moments with this camera.

The A30 also runs on the latest Android 9 pie with One UI on top. A lot of the experience that the users would be receiving would mainly be from One UI. One UI is basically the pinnacle of evolution of Samsung’s over the year refinements and what you're left with is much-improved UI with great features.

Coming to the battery, Galaxy A30 has a battery rated at 4000 mAh which provides a backup for a full day easily. It has a fast charger and a USB Type C port for charging. The phone feels lightweight in hand and only weighs 163 gm. Though there is no official confirmation however this article from GSMArena claims that the Samsung Galaxy A30 comes with an IP68 rating so it is water and dust proof.

Samsung has brought M series and A series to target the market of under 10k and 20k and this A30 does a decent job overall with a strong camera performance, good processor, dedicated SD card slot and an improved UI. For a price point of 17000, this is a very welcome phone from Samsung given we saw Samsung A6 and A6 Plus being launched with the pricing of around 20k and a specification of an under 10k smartphone. With this revamp, Samsung has up its ante to take on the budget segment.

Samsung A30 is available in blue and black colors and is available on Flipkart and Amazon.

Brief Review:

Redmi smartphones have been feeling the competitive pressure from the likes of Realme 2 Pro, Samsung M series. Redmi Note 6 Pro did not see much updates apart from camera and got a subdued response, not something Xiaomi is used to. Here we go through the Redmi Note 7 and bring out its top features, specifications and the pricing. Alongside, Redmi Note 7, Xiaomi has also launched the much awaited Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Redmi Note 7 comes with a 6.3 inch IPS display with a Full HD plus resolution. There is a dot notch on the top which holds the selfie camera and the phone has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The display looks perfectly bright and has punchier colors. It is not an AMOLED display but of great standard that your experience will not fall short while watching movies or playing games. The back of the phone is built of glass and has a gradient color look which we have seen in the phones from Honor similar to the Honor 10 Lite. It is the first time Redmi has introduced glass back in the budget segment phones. Previous Redmi Note series phones were not used to focus on looks but with Note 7, Xiaomi has also looked to strengthen this area as well.

The phone comes with the Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back and the build quality is very strong. Xiaomi has been teasing the phone in many of its videos regarding its durability. The phone has decent build quality but not the best as it failed in the bend test. There is a transparent case bundled in the box so you can use it to further add protection to it.

For the processor, Xiaomi has finally decided to move ahead from the Snapdragon 636 for which they were heavily trolled on the social media. The Redmi Note 7 features the Snapdragon 660 processor and works very smooth. On the AnTuTu benchmark, Note 7 scores around 1,44,840 which is a good score for a phone at this price. Redmi Note 7 has been launched in 2 variants, 3 GB RAM with 32 GB storage and 4 GB with 64 GB storage. There is a hybrid sim slot to use it as a dual sim phone or expand the storage up to 256 GB, something which Xiaomi might want to update in future phones by bringing a dedicated storage space with dual sim support.

Performance wise, the phone works like a charm and we did not find any lag or heating issues even with extended usage. Redmi has been marketing the phone with the keyword “Next level” and we feel the phone truly delivers on the expectation. It is not a new chip in the market but powerful enough to support true multitasking. We have seen phones like Asus Zenfone Max 2 Pro and other being launched with the same and they have fared well even after months of usage but the previous phones used to work on the underclocked processor hence they did not get the true performance. Redmi Note 7 brings in the proper true variant of Snapdragon 660 which is not underclocked.

Now coming to the camera review of this the Note 7 review. Here Note 7 has a dual rear camera with 12 MP f/2.2 sensor and a 5 MP f/2.4 secondary sensor. We found the camera shots were decent with a good level of details. The color accuracy also looked good in most of the scenario. The portrait shots work well and are able to perfectly blur the background in most of the scenario to pop out the subject but there were some scenarios where some objects did not get blur. These small improvements can be made anytime with the software upgrades as the portrait works fine in most of the shots.

Note 7 and Note 7 Pro also introduces a Night Mode for low light images. We observed that this mode does a decent job by clicking a near to accurate pictures. The shots had limited noise and the lampshades, the sky seems to be captured properly with proper details of the surrounding.  The camera also supports HDR, short video, AI features and filters as part of other features of the camera and all of them to deliver on the expectations. The 4K video recording is disabled in the phone which was anyway above expectation from a budget segment smartphone.

For the selfie shots, Note 7 has a 13 MP sensor and supports HDR and AI mode. The selfie images are crisp with a good level of details. The portrait shots also blur decently well. Overall, the selfie camera has a lower Megapixel sensor from the Redmi Note 6 Pro 20 MP but the performance is slightly better. Overall the cameras are decent for the price range of 10k. If you are looking for a camera, then you should go for Redmi Note 7 Pro which comes with 48 MP Sony IMX568 sensor.

From the software perspective, the phone runs on MIUI 10 which is based on the Android Pie and brings in a lot of useful software features but the MIUI bloatware somewhat kills the fun. Depending on how used to you are to the MI apps and bloatware, you may feel comfortable with the software.

The battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh which easily lasts for more than a day in medium usage and at least a day with heavy usage. Though the battery capacity remains the same, the phone weight has gone a little up to 186 grams. On the other hand, Redmi has also taken the fight to next level by introducing a Type C port for charging which the industry experts have been waiting for a long time. The phone supports fast charging but the bundled charger is a 10 W charger so you will have to buy a fast charger to use the quick charge support

Redmi has kept the 3.5 mm headphone jack alive, there is also an IR blaster available to use your phone as a remote for home appliances. There is a notification LED available at the bottom. There is no IP rating as such but Redmi claims that the phone is splash proof but we have not tested it yet. For unlocking, this phone has a fingerprint sensor on the back and also supports face unlocking using the front camera and both the method work super fast and accurate.

Coming to the pricing, Redmi variants look to keep the whole budget segment engaged and happy. The 3GB-32GB variants costs Rs 9,999, 4GB-64GB costs 11,999 . Depending on your usage and budget, you can look to choose any of the above variants.

Overall the smartphone does a great job and we can say excellent given the price range of 10000 to 12000. The looks are gorgeous, the processor and the camera performance sees a decent upside. Introduction of Type C and fast charging are like icing on the cake.

In comparison to the Redmi Note 7 vs Redmi Note 7 Pro, the major differences are in the processor and the camera performance. The looks, build quality, battery and charging remains the same. Xiaomi is currently fully focused to get the Redmi Note 7 rolling well and with such powerful specifications and features, we are sure Redmi is going to get a good reward from its user base

The Redmi Note 7 Pro features the Snapdragon 675 processor and works very smooth. On the AnTuTu benchmark, Note 7 scores every massive 1,80,808 point which is the best score for a phone at this price. Redmi Note 7 Pro has been launched in 2 variants, 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage and 6 GB with 128 GB storage. There is a hybrid sim slot to use it as a dual sim phone or expand the storage up to 256 GB, something which Xiaomi might want to update in future phones by bringing a dedicated storage space with dual sim support.

It supports true multitasking and we opened multiple apps and games and the phone responded quickly. Snapdragon 675 in a smartphone under 15000 certainly raises the expectations of the next smartphones in 2019.

Now coming to the most awaited part of this the Note 7 Pro review, a feature where no other company has even reached close by to what Xiaomi offers, the Camera. Here Note 7 Pro has a dual rear camera with 48 MP f/1.8 Sony IMX 586 sensor and a 5 MP f/2.4 secondary sensor. We found the camera shots were full of details and the color accuracy and saturation were spot on. The close-up shots retain a good level of sharpness which looks natural and soothing to eyes.

The portrait shots work well and are able to perfectly blur the background in most of the scenario to pop out the subject but there were some scenarios where some objects did not get blur. These small improvements can be made anytime with the software upgrades as the portrait works fine in most of the shots. The 48 MP sensor is a true 48 MP and images look same crisp and do not lose the shine at every point of zoom in. It is highest ever sensor seen in a smartphone. Here each image comes to be in GB size and to avoid the memory being filled quickly, Redmi has introduced the 48 MP option in the Pro mode, while the normal mode would click images in 12 MP. You can easily switch to 48MP from the camera app options.

Note 7 Pro also introduces a Night Mode for low light images. We observed that this mode does a decent job by clicking a near to accurate pictures. The shots had very limited noise and the lampshades, the sky seems to be captured properly with proper details of the surrounding. Certainly, with Note 7 Pro, Redmi has once again taken the competition to the next level. The camera also supports HDR, short video, AI features and filters as part of other features of the camera and all of them to deliver on the expectations.

For the selfie shots, Note 7 Pro has a 13 MP sensor and supports HDR and AI mode. The selfie images are crisp, beautiful with a good level of details. The portrait shots also blur decently well. Overall, the selfie camera has a lower Megapixel sensor from the Redmi Note 6 Pro 20 MP but the performance is slightly better. Overall the camera quality is top notch and one of the main highlights of this Redmi Note 7 Pro.

The 4GB-64GB variants costs Rs 13,999, 6GB-128GB costs 16,999 . Depending on your usage and budget, you can look to choose any of the above variants.

Overall the smartphone does a great job and we can say excellent given the price range of around 15000. The looks are gorgeous, the processor sees a decent upside and the camera performance is of another level. Introduction of Type C and fast charging are like icing on the cake.

Xiaomi is currently fully focused to get the Redmi Note 7 Pro rolling well and with such powerful specifications and features, we are sure Redmi is going to get a good reward from its user base. First half of 2019 in seeing smartphone launch like Redmi Note 7 Pro which would set the tone for the second half.

Brief Review:

The past half a decade Samsung was mainly popular due to its flagship and midrange smartphones. They did try out the J series of smartphones but it was subdued by the Chinese contenders. Mainly Xiaomi. However, it surprised everybody when it announced the M series of smartphones. For the very first time, the Redmi series by Xiaomi is getting some good competition from Samsung. After launching M10 and M20. It's time for the next phone in this series.

Today, we would be checking out the top features and specification of the much-awaited Samsung M30. Read on to find out if the M30 possess a tough completion to the offerings made by its competitor or is it just another smartphone trying to enter the midrange race.

Let's first talk about the brain of this phone which is based on the 14nm process and is the in-house produced Exynos 7904 SoC. The 7904 lies between the Snapdragon 636 and the Snapdragon 660 in performance which is a good thing considering its price point. There are 2 Cortex-A73 cores running at 1.8 GHz and 6 Cortex-A53 running at 1.6 GHz to provide you with zippy performance. While the Mali-G71 MP2 GPU handles the graphics.  Thus, decent performance can be expected from this chip. Now, when we come to budget phones, we often either see 2 sim card slots and no memory card slot or the notorious Hybrid card slot. However, the M30, unlike its competition, provides 2 sim card slot and a separate memory card slot.

The M30 brings with itself a triple-camera setup of 13MP+5MP+5MP. It has 1 primary sensor at 13MP at F1.9 for those crispy shots. It has a 5MP F2.2 depth sensor for Live Focus, which basically is Samsung’s fancy way of saying portrait shots. The 3rd camera is a 5MP ultra-wide lens. It also houses a 16MP selfie camera upfront in that tiny Infinity U notch for the selfie lovers. Now you might be thinking that the primary and the wide-angle lens is the same as the M20. Then what’s the difference? It’s only the depth sensors that’s an addition, right? Well, that’s not really the case. It’s true that both the phones have a similar primary sensor at 13MP but that about where the similarities end. The 5MP ultra-wide used on the M30 is actually a 123-degree wide angle lens Vs the 120 degrees in the M20. The overall output of the lenses on the M30 in one word is ‘great’.

The M30 comes with a monstrous 5000mAh battery. Couple that to a 15W fast charging power adapter which comes bundled in the box over type C port and you’ve got a battery champ for your phone. The huge battery comes with a 23 hours video playback, 31 hours off talk time and 105 hours of music playback. Now those great specs mean nothing if you don’t have a good display to display it on.

Well, when it comes to the display the M30 is no slouch either. Supporting a massive 90 % + 19.5:9 screen to body ratio it comes at 6.4 inches. Not only is the screen big but it's beautiful too as it’s the super AMOLED FHD+ Infinity U panel variant of Samsung’s in-house creation. This is a major upgrade from the M20 which only support an LCD panel. What does that mean? This simply converts to deep blacks and punchy colors and great with great clarity. It also has the always on display feature which is a feature seen only on its expensive handsets.

The Display is also Widevine L1 certified which means that it can easily play videos from amazon prime and Netflix. Coming to port it has the single speaker, microphone, USB type C port and a headphone jack to the bottom. With the power and volume buttons on the right and the Sim and memory card slot to the left. With the 2nd microphone on top.

So, we think of price as one of the Pros. Funny right? That is because this in a way actually is a feature considering the price that this phone being offered for. The 4GB RAM and 64GB storage come at rupees 14990 while the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant come at just 17990. When you consider the amount of tech and especially that super AMOLED display you get, the price tag truly becomes a feature.

As we all know that not every gadget can have everything great in it. But the M30 checks a lot of things correct. The Exynos 7904 does not support Bluetooth 5.0. This is a major drawback with the high transfer speed that Bluetooth 5.0 the M30 is limited to only Bluetooth 4.2.

The reason why we see the following things as drawbacks or cons is due to the existence of the Xiaomi Redmi note 7 pro. At almost the same price the M30 simply cannot keep up with the Snapdragon 675 on the Redmi Note 7 Pro. And the other nitpick would be the build and design of the M30 which is a complete glossy plastic build. Vs the glass sandwich design on the Redmi note 7 Pro.

One of the biggest bummers that the M30 brings along is by not adding an ambient light sensor. The auto brightness is completely handled by the front-facing camera. We are not trying to compare the M30 to the Note 7 Pro. It’s just this that the Note 7 Pro happens to exists at the same price point.

Apart from this the M30 is a solid phone and provides great value for money. If you are a Samsung fan and are looking for a phone under 15000 then M30 is the best you can get.

  • Back Camera: 16MP + 2MP Dual Camera

Brief Review:

Oppo K1 is Oppo's first smartphone in 2019 and it comes with plenty of features and at a surprising price point. With this pricing, it goes head to head with value for money brands like Redmi, Realme, Asus etc. So how is Oppo K1? Should you buy it? Find out in our brief review below.

Oppo K1 is a midrange smartphone and is priced in the 15000 to 20000 price segment. It comes with a reflective gradient back design where you will see shades of blue and purple as you come from top to bottom. The design is flashy so some people are going to love it and some will hate it. If you don't like it, there is a simple black color variant for you.

On the front, we have a large 6.41 inch AMOLED display panel of 1080p Full HD+ resolution. AMOLED panels are something that we don't see in this price segment. The display panel is gorgeous with sharp colors and good viewing angles. The notch design is dewdrop and the bezels are thin all around which means the screen to body ratio is over 90%. Oppo has used an AMOLED panel to place a fingerprint sensor below the display. This in-display fingerprint sensor is also a first in this price segment. Before this, we saw it on Vivo V11 Pro which was priced around 25000 in India.

To run the apps and games, we get Snapdragon 660 AIE chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The storage is expandable up to 256GB via the MicroSD card slot in the triple slot sim tray. The performance of the device is good and it can handle a lot of apps and games without any lag. The UI is a bit clunky though and there is a lot of bloatware which is not surprising because the phone runs on Oppo's ColorOS. Still, the overall experience is good.

There is a 3500 mAh battery inside the phone. Color OS is well optimized and doesn't drain the battery at all. You can expect battery backup of 1.5 days with normal use. The charger is usual 5V 2Amps and will charge the phone fully in around 2 hours 15 minutes. The charging port is still MicroUSB. It would have been great if Oppo has provided a USB Type C port here.

For taking pictures, Oppo has provided a powerful set of cameras here. The rear setup is 16MP+2MP dual where 2MP is the depth sensor. The 16MP sensor has an aperture of f/1.7 which helps in getting more light in low-light conditions. The camera uses AI to detect various scenes and optimize the settings. Beauty mode and stickers are also available if you like to use those. The front camera is a 25MP sensor and takes beautiful selfies in almost all kinds of conditions. The pictures look good with plenty of details. Background blue in portrait shots also looks natural.

Overall, Oppo K1 is a feature packed phone at an excellent price. AMOLED display, In-display fingerprint, powerful processor, good battery, good camera performance makes it one of the best phone under 15000 to 20000 segment. Other options in this range include Mi A2, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Moto One Power, and Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Brief Review:

Samsung isn't really known for making value for money phones and that's why they have been having a tough time in India. Brands like Redmi, Realme, Motorola, Oppo, and Vivo have flooded the market with plenty of good phones at great prices and Samsung has lost top spot as well. Samsung Galaxy M10 and M20 are here to change that trend and look very impressive smartphones in the budget segment. Let's take a look at what M20 offers.

Both M10 and M20 have a very similar design. The only major change you will see is that M20 has a fingerprint sensor on the back and the display of M20 is a bit larger than M10's display. The phone has a polycarbonate build with a glossy back which looks good but gets smudged easily. The display on the front has a small notch. Samsung calls it an Infinity V display. The front camera is placed inside the notch and the earpiece is above the notch. The bezels all around are thin but the chin is narrow as well which means the screen to body ratio is more than 90%.

The display resolution is Full HD 1080. It is not an AMOLED panel but still, it is a beautiful and sharp display with good colors and viewing angles. Overall, this is nice looking smartphone with a beautiful display under 15000 from Samsung.

The battery inside the phone is massive 5000 mAh and the charger that comes with the phone is a 15W fast charger. The battery backup of the phone is excellent and it will last for around 2 days with medium usage and more with light usage. The fast charger works well and charges the phone fully is less than 2 hours 30 minutes which is excellent considering the battery capacity. The phone weighs 186 grams which is a decent weight and is easy to hold.

The Samsung M10 is powered by Exynos 7904 1.8GHz octa-core chipset. It is not the best you would find in this range but still it is a decent chipset which handles multitasking well. The gaming performance isn't that great though. There are 2 variants of Samsung M20: 3GB RAM 32GB Storage and 4GB RAM 64GB storage. Those who are going to install a lot of apps and play games should go for the 4GB 64GB variant of M20.

The Samsung M20 runs on Samsungs Experience UI which is a skin based on Android 8.1 Oreo. There is a good amount of bloatware. The UI is clean and easy to use though. The performance of M20 on benchmarks is decent as well. It scores a bit above 100000 on Antutu benchmarks.

On the camera side, we have a surprise from Samsung. The rear camera is a dual setup of 13MP (f/1.9) + 5MP (f/2.2 ultra-wide) which is the same we saw on M10. While most companies just throw in a useless 2MP depth sensor as a secondary camera, Samsung has added an ultra wide angle lens which can be very useful. The primary sensor is also a good one and has an f/1.9 aperture which helps in low light shots. The camera on the front is an 8MP f/2.0 sensor. Both front and rear camera performance are decent for an under 15000 smartphone but not the best. The pictures taken in daylight look nice with good amount of details. The portrait mode pictures also look decent. If you need a phone with a great selfie camera, Realme U1 should be your choice.

The phone comes with a headphone jack and a triple slot sim tray so you can use 2 VOLTE sims simultaneously with a MicroSD card. Dedicated MicroSD slot is something we love because it gives flexibility to the user to increase storage without compromising with the dual sim functionality of the phone.

Overall, Samsung M20 is an excellent value for money smartphone and one of the best phones under 15000 you can buy. Great design, nice display, excellent battery, good cameras make it a great allrounder phone. If your usage is light, you can go for the 3-32GB variant which is priced a bit above 10000 and heavy users should go for the 4-64GB variant. Other good options in this range include Realme 2 Pro, Redmi Note 6 Pro, and Moto One Power

9. Honor 10 Lite

10 Lite

Features

  • 4 GB RAM | 64 GB ROM | MicroSD upto 512 GB
  • 6.21 inch Full HD+ Display 1080p
  • Back Camera: 13MP + 2MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 24MP
  • 3400mAh Battery
  • Dual Sim Device
  • Available in Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, Sky Blue Colors

Best Price ₹12999

Brief Review:

Honor 10 Lite comes as a successor for the Honor 9 Lite which saw a great response from users in 2018. 10 Lite comes with major upgrades in the processor and looks domain and is the first phone from Honor in 2019.

Talking about the looks, this phone is an absolute killer which comes with the 6.21-inch long display having Full HD Plus resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The back of the phone is built of plastic and gives nice reflections and design pattern due to the glossy finish. Surely, It attracts some fingerprint smudges but those are visible only at some point and with a TPU case you can keep the looks intact with no smudges. The top side of the phone has sim slots and secondary microphone and the bottom houses a micro USB port for charging, speaker output, 3.5mm headphone jack, and primary noise cancellation microphone.

On the design side given the pricing, the phones gets a 9 on 10.

The waterdrop notch adds to the look and holds the front camera but if you do not like it then it can be removed from the settings. The display has a 91% screen to body ratio and with Full HD Plus resolution and offers good brightness levels and punchier colors. Playing games or watching videos on the phone will be entertaining as the color reproduction is perfect.

For the performance, Honor has used the latest Kirin 710 processor. It is an octa-core chipset with four Arm Cortex A53 cores (for day to day applications) and four Arm Cortex A73 cores (primarily to boost clock speed in graphics intensive gaming sessions). There is a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal memory to support the multitasking and storage requirement. However, you get a hybrid sim slot so you can either use it as dual sim or expand the memory and use in a single sim configuration. There is also a 6GB/64GB variant but that costs around 18k (4K more than the 4GB/64 GB variant) which we feel offers less value for money until you have a high multitasking requirement.

Read about the Kirin 710 comparison with the other competitive Qualcomm Snapdragon processor

Honor 10 lite scores around 1,38,500 on the AnTuTu Benchmark which indicates powerful multitasking capability as was reflected in our review tests. We did not face any lag during our testing and the gaming performance was also spot on with no heating or latency issues with even the high-end games.

Now coming to one of the Honor stand out the domain, the camera performance. The rear camera comes with a dual rear sensor setup having a primary 13MP sensor (f/1.8 aperture) and a dedicated 2 MP depth sensor for the portrait shots. The photos come out with pleasant color and as usual, the Honor camera apps offer some extraordinary app features and AI support which enhances the color and contrast. In the daylight shots, the photos were clean and looked appealing because of the sharpness and quality.  For the portrait shots, the edge detection worked fine and the image captures a lot of details. Honor has also added a lighting effect feature for the portrait shots.

For the selfie shots, Honor 10 lite has a 24MP Sony IMX 576 sensor with different scene recognition. Overall image look crisp but the colors were sometimes a bit out of touch but with AI enabled, the camera does a better job.  In low light, the camera does a decent job but there was noticeable noise. Also, there is no stabilization available for the video.

For the software, this phone comes with Emotion UI (EMUI 9) which is built over the latest version of Android, Android Pie (9.0). The UI has some bloatware but comes with some features that can be really helpful. Other features like Party mode is available on Honor Lite 10, using which you can connect with multiple Honor phones nearby to play the same song creating a party like atmosphere.

To get the phone to unlock, Honor has provided both fingerprint and face unlocking mechanism. Both methods are extremely responsive and accurate. The phone weighs around 160 gm and has a battery of 3400 mAh capacity. It can provide a backup of around 1 day and less if you are a heavy user.

Honor should have looked to give at least a battery capacity of 4000 mAh given the increasing use of the phone. There is a micro USB port to charge the phone. You get a standard 10W charger bundled in the box which charges the complete phone in around 2 hours as the phone does not support fast charging. Also, you do not get any IP rating or certification with this phone, so dust particles or water can harm the phone. The audio output is loud enough with decent sound quality but not something extraordinary compared to other phones in 10000 to 15000 price segment.

Overall, Honor 10 Lite is a lighter version of the Honor 10 and comes with pretty attractive design, powerful chipset, and a decent camera.

10. Huawei Y9

Y9

Features

  • 4 GB RAM | 64 GB ROM | MicroSD upto 400 GB
  • 6.5 inch Full HD Plus Display 1080p
  • Back Camera: 13MP + 2MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 16MP + 2MP Dual Camera
  • 4000mAh Battery
  • Dual Sim Device
  • Available in Black, Sapphire Blue Colors

Best Price ₹13990

Brief Review:

Huawei has been trying to make a mark in the Indian market and has launched some great phones but failed to match the expectations vs pricing. Will the latest Huawei Y9 2019 be able to impress the users? Let us find it out in the brief review.

Y9 comes with a big 6.5 inch Full HD Plus display which has proper colors and sharpness. The big screen makes it attractive for watching videos or playing games. The back of the phone has a glossy finish and is built of polycarbonate material. The back attracts some smudges but the beautiful looks still remain intact. It comes in Black and Sapphire Blue colors and to us, the Sapphire Blue looks unique and better of the two. In the looks and design, the phone does a good job. Do make sure you use a back cover and a tempered glass for the screen to protect the damage if the phone accidentally falls.

For the processor, Huawei which is the parent company of the Honor brand has focussed itself on the Kirin 710 chipset for the 10k to 20k phone segment and this phone also features the same processor. It has a single variant with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. The overall score of the Y9 2019 on AnTuTu benchmark comes around 1,38,000 which is a powerful score and could handle multiple apps and gaming at high graphics settings during our testing. Thanks to the 4 A73 cores that fires up the clock speed in graphics gaming. Honor 10 Lite also comes with Kirin 710 processor which is prices around 14k.

Performance wise, Huawei Y9 2019 impresses with Kirin 710

As always, let us now check the brief review of the Camera sensor and the features this phone offers. Huawei Y9 offers a Quad AI Camera setup - 2 in front and 2 in the rear. We have a 16 MP f/1.8 sensor and a 2 MP depth sensor on the back and 13 MP f/2.0 and a 2 MP depth sensor for the selfie. The captured image offers good detailing of the scene around but we felt that the sharpness levels were a bit average. Most importantly, the camera manages to present the foreground and background properly when checking the accurate blue sky colors Y9 captures. The AI is available on both front and rear camera and is used for object and scene recognition, we found that most of the AI images just saturates the color.

The selfie captures good skin tone and the video recording from both the camera does not support 4K or EIS(Electronic Image Stabilization). Coming to the portrait shots, the edge detection looks accurate as both cameras have a dedicated depth sensor. The image had good details and quality but not outstanding given the pricing of 17k and the competitive domain.

The gaming performance of the phone also works smoothly, thanks to the Kirin 710. We could easily play the games with high graphics setting without any latency. There was also almost nil or very minimal heating observed during extended gaming.

From the software perspective, Huawei Y9 comes with not the latest EMUI 8 (EMUI 9 is the latest), which is based over Android Oreo. We expect Huawei to upgrade the software very soon. There is a headphone jack available and the phone supports both fingerprint and face unlocking. Needless to say, both the methods are very accurate and fast as have been seen in all the Honor (owned by Huawei) smartphones.  The phone does not have any IP certification so keep it protected from water and dust.

Y9 gets a battery of 4000 mAh capacity which is good enough to power the phone easily for more than a day. Medium usage can extend the backup for around 1.5 days. However, we only get a micro USB port for charging and the box comes with a standard 10W charger (not a fast one). The box also has a TPU case and the phone supports a dedicated SD card to expand the memory up to 400 GB.

Though Huawei Y9 2019 looks to be a decent phone overall but faces stiff competition from other popular phones in this price segment. Poco F1 is a very aggressive phone in this price segment on under 20000 and offers better hardware and camera. Y9 clearly wins in the looks but that is something not sufficient for a phone priced between 15 to 20k. Also, the Oppo K1 seems to be a better option.
