Brief Review:

Honor is on a roll in India and they are launching phones at a crazy rate. Till August, we have seen more than 10 launches from Honor. Honor Play is the latest one which is priced under Rs. 20000 and specifications are going to surprise you. Let's take a look at the brief review of Honor Play.

Honor Play is a nice looking phone. The phone has a metal unibody design and has a matte finish on the back which gives it a nice look. Both Black and Blue color looks great. The dua camera setup is placed vertically at the corner and the fingerprint sensor is placed at the center. The fingerprint sensor is quick and responsive.

On the front, we have a notch display of 6.3 inches. The resolution is Full HD+ and the aspect ratio is 19:9. Notch was more of a compromise when it showed up on iPhone X and after that, every OEM copied it like it was some kind of feature. We are not really a fan of the notch but some people do like it. Overall, the phone looks really good and is comfortable to hold.

Honor Play is powered by Huawei's own Kirin 970 chipset which is there on their other flagship phones like P20 Pro, Honor 10, View 10 etc. The Kirin 970 is an octa-core SoC with 4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 and 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. It is similar to Snapdragon 835 in performance.  For handling the graphics workloads, Kirin 970 packs an impressive Mali G72 MP 12 as GPU, and It has serious power. Honor has made things even better with GPU turbo which provides better performance and more efficiency. With 4GB of RAM and Kirin 970, you are going to see flagship like performance on the Honor Play. Whether it is switching between multiple apps or playing heavy games, this phone is going to handle it with ease.

The performance is visible in Antutu benchmark as well. You can expect an Antutu score of around 200000 which is 30-50% more than other phones in this price range. On Geekbench, you will see a single core benchmark score of around 1800 and multi-core score of around 6800.

Honor Play comes in just 1 variant which packs 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage. You can expand the storage via MicroSD up to 256GB. But it is a hybrid sim slot so you cannot use 2 sim cards with a MicroSD. The RAM and storage are again flagship grade which is something you don't usually see in this price range.

Honor Play comes with a dual 16MP+2MP camera setup on the back and 16MP single camera on the front. The dual camera setup on the back has a 16MP color sensor and the 2MP sensor helps to give a bokeh effect to the pictures also known as portrait mode. The camera can record 4K videos and has EIS-AIS stabilization as well. The camera performance is good in outdoor natural light conditions. The pictures have a good amount of details with natural looking colors. The portrait mode works well.

Honor Play is also using AI in the camera which detects the category and surrounding to optimize the pictures. If you are taking a picture in a park in daylight, it will tweak settings according to it and if you are taking pictures inside a room in low light conditions then settings will be tweaked according to that. It all happens in real time and you don't have to do anything.

The front 16MP camera also takes decent shots indoors and outdoors. It also uses AI to enhance/beautify your face. Plenty of options are provided to make your selfies look better. Selfie camera is also used for Face unlock which works well and unlocks your phone in less than a second.

Honor is pitching Honor Play as gaming smartphone. In addition to GPU Turbo, there's one other interesting feature which is 4D gaming mode. It takes the gaming experience to next level by providing feedback like vibrations while you are shooting in a game. It is going to drain the battery faster but it is a cool feature.

Honor Play comes with EMUI 8.2 which is a custom skin based on Android 8 Oreo. EMUI has some bloatware but it is not laggy. It has some useful features like dual apps which can come in handy if you want to use multiple accounts on apps like WhatsApp. Overall, the UI looks good and it is responsive as well. You won't face any lag during the day to day usage.

Honor Play comes with a 3750mAh battery which is a good capacity. You can expect a backup of around 1 day on medium to heavy usage with a screen on time of around 6 hours. With low usage, it would last for 1.5 days on a single charge. The phones come with a 9V 2A fast charge in the box which is another plus point.

Honor Play is not water or dust proof and there is no IP rating so keeping it away from the water will be a good option.

So what are we getting at a price of 20000? A good looking phone with a nice large display on the front, a powerful chipset, 4GB of RAM, dual camera, large battery and excellent performance. We think Honor Play is the best phone under 20000 as of now. The only negative point is the availability. It is available via flash sales and the stock is very limited so getting hands on a device is going to be difficult.

Brief Review:

Huawei and Honor have been looking to acquire a good share of the market with the introduction of their smartphone in all the price range. Huawei Nova 3i seems to be a good bet which offers a notch display beautiful design, good camera with a plethora of AI features and dual camera as both rear and front. Nova 3i has a good value for money score with a premium feel for a budget of under 20000. Let us look at the reviews, features, specifications and every minute details of the Huawei Nova 3i.

Huawei Nova 3i comes with a big 6.3-inch notch type full view display with a glass design at back and a metal frame in between front and back. the display has perfect viewing angles, colour reproduction and we have no complaints of this great Full HD plus resolution display on the Nova 3i. With the notch design, the aspect ratio in 19.5:9 and we just cannot think of anything beautiful than this in an under 20k budget. The glass back design looks amazing which produces different blue and purple colour shades at different angles.

The design looks pretty amazing and eye-catchy and is a total premium option to consider. But the back glass, as in all the phones is a fingerprint magnet, so keep a cover handy (maybe transparent one). The smartphone weighs around 169 gm and a 7.6 mm in width which enables easy hold and usage.

With Nova 3i, Huawei seems to have finally moved over the Kirin 659 as seen in almost all the budget range phones. Nova 3i comes powered with a Kirin 710 processor clubbed with 4 GB of RAM. Kirin 710 is much powerful than the Kirin 659 and Nova 3i scores around 1,38,000 on the Antutu giving a good challenge to the likes of Mi A2 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro in the performance. The gaming and multitasking experience is super smooth and no lags or hiccups could be observed.

Let us talk about the camera where the nova 3i comes with the dual camera on both front and back as was seen in the Honor 9i and the Honor 9 lite. The rear camera is vertically placed with dual sensors of 16MP and 2MP where the 2 MP is a depth sensor to take the portrait shots for bokeh effects. Here the shots are good in the daylight which crisp shots. The camera has AI features, where if you are clicking in the AI mode, it detects the objects and beautifies the image based on the algorithms. You also have the option to select the non-AI image if you like that for certain scenarios. you also get Qmoji support to animate your expression and voice. For the rear camera,  it struggles a bit on the low light shots and there is no 4K video support which is a bit of disappointment. If you are into shooting a lot of videos from the rear camera, we will not suggest you go for this as there a lot of better options available.

The front camera has a 24MP and 2MP dual sensors are located inside the notch and does not fail to impress us anytime. The front camera of Nova 3i clicks some exceptional photos and with a dedicated depth sensor for the bokeh effect, and the portrait clicks are also just amazing and spot on. We also get the AI support for the front camera as well on the 3i and helps to beautify the scenes with its AI recognition.

This smartphone supports some other features like AI shopping and AI to directly buy by clicking any object in the image. It also supports AI gallery that allows you to search for similar images based on the sample images.

Nova 3i comes with a 128 GB of internal storage which can be expanded using the hybrid micro SD card slot up to 256 GB. The smartphone runs on EMUI 8.2 built on Android 8.1 Oreo and has a smooth usage. It supports both face (throught the front camera) and fingerprint unlock and both are quick and accurate.

The battery on Huawei Nova 3i is rated at 3340 mAh and runs through the day with a normal day to day usage like messaging, listening to songs and browsing over the internet. Nova 3i has a micro USB slot and not a Type C  and neither does the screen has scratch protection which are some of the disappointments. Also, there is no IP rating on this phone so keep it safe from the water and dust.

So what you get in this 20k budget smartphone are beautiful looks, decent camera and good performance. But before you make a decision and have a knack of powerful performance over the looks, then look at the Honor play review which was launched a few days after the Huawei Nova 3i and comes with Kirin 970 and offers much better performance, better battery but harder to grab as it comes in flash sale.

3. Samsung Galaxy J8

Galaxy J8

Features

  • 4 GB RAM | 64 GB ROM | MicroSD upto 256 GB
  • 6 inch HD Plus Display 720p
  • Back Camera: 16MP + 5MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 16MP
  • 3500mAh Battery
  • Dual Sim Device
  • Available in Colors

Best Price ₹18999

Brief Review:

Samsung Galaxy J8 is the next smartphone under 20000 to hold an infinity display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. As seen in almost all the Samsung smartphones of above 15000 range, they come with an AMOLED display. This Galaxy J8 has a screen size of 6 inches with HD Plus resolution. The screen is bright and has a good colour reproduction but it is only the Samsung phones that provide HD Plus display in this price range while other smartphones offer Full HD Display. But on the other hand, Samsung uses Super AMOLED display in all its smartphones, which is one of the best in the smartphone. So you will have no issues watching movies or videos on the phone as the colours on the screen are sharp and bright.

Talking about the build quality, this phone is build of polycarbonate(plastic body) and the frame in between is of metal. The quality is decent and feels good to hold in hand. Samsung Galaxy A6 priced at 22000 offers metal build quality but the camera performance is much better in Galaxy J8 as discussed below, J8 also has a bigger display and is priced around 3000 less than the A6.

Galaxy J8 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 with 4 GB of RAM and scores around 57000 on the AnTuTu Benchmark. The processor is same as seen in the Redmi 5 and the Antutu score is much lower when compared to the powerful Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.  But with Samsung optimizations, the phone works fine for day to day usage with no lags observed, though playing very high-end games will not be feasible and is not suggested. Using multiple applications at a time are smooth but not top notch. 4GB of RAM has a good role to play here for the multitasking so normal day to day browsing, using the camera, YouTube and low to mid-end games will go on smoothly.

Samsung has put a special focus on camera in all the latest phone launch, and this Galaxy J8 follows the same trend. It gets a dual rear camera of 16 MP(f/1.9) and 5MP(f/1.7) with a single LED flash placed vertically in the middle on the back. The front camera has a 16MP sensor with a LED flash. Both the front and rear camera click brilliant images with perfect colour contrast and saturation. The bokeh effect from the rear camera just looks amazing and overall the camera is one of the best in this price range and surely going to give a tough competition. The low light shots are also perfect with very little or no noise.

With the rear camera, Samsung J8 has introduced three new features to allow click and create the different type of images and they are Portrait Dolly, Background Blur Shape and Portrait Backdrop. In the Background Blur Shape,  it allows the user to add a soft touch to the blur and applies different shapes like heart, butterflies, stars etc. In the Portrait Dolly feature, which creates a GIF of the image where the main person or object zooms out of the background adding a cinematic feel. In the last Portrait Backdrop feature, which allows you to change the focus of the image after clicking it (LIVE FOCUS), and blurs the rest of the image and also adds some cool funky effects in the background.

This smartphone also a new feature of "Chat Over Video" which allows you to chat while watching the video on the phone. The chatting background box is transparent and a pop up comes on one corner that allows you to chat simultaneously while watching the video in the background.

It comes with an internal storage of 64 GB and can be expanded up to 256 GB using a dedicated MicroSD card slot and can be used as a proper dual sim smartphone. Galaxy J8 supports a fingerprint unlocking and the sensor is placed just below the rear camera setup. It also supports face unlocking and both methods are accurate and work smoothly. Samsung Galaxy J8 runs on Android Oreo 8.0 and has very little bloatware. The skin is smooth and easy to use.

Galaxy J8 is powered by a battery rated at 3500 mAh and easily works throughout the day, there is no fast charging available with this smartphone, which only a few smartphones support in this price range. The handset comes with a Samsung branded earphone is the box which no company offers these days and there is also a one-time screen replacement free of cost if you buy this phone before 31st July 2018.  There is no IP rating on this phone so keep it protected from dust and water.

The Samsung J series like the Samsung Galaxy J6 and this Galaxy J8 have better value for money compared to the other smartphones and one of our top picks if you are looking for a Samsung phone under 20k.

Brief Review:

Samsung Galaxy A6 in the latest smartphone launched in the last week of May 2018. With this smartphone, Samsung has aligned some of the features with the latest trends and a few still to be achieved. Samsung has one of the best industrial design and manufacturing processes in the world and you can be assured of that by the looks of this smartphone. Built primarily of metal, the smartphone feels totally premium without any two ways about It. The metal construction makes the smartphone solid and well-gripping in hand.

On the front, is the iconic Infinity Display at an aspect ratio of 18.5: 9 with a resolution of 720 x 1480 pixels with a pixel density of 294PPI on a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED Panel, the resolution isn’t what we were expecting. It had to be at least a 1080p panel but Samsung has invested into an infinity display which has some borders on the sides and very significant ones at top and bottom. The display feels a lot better than a 720 x  1480 display and is super bright, super saturated and the colours just feel so crisp and punchy.

At the back, we find a refreshing approach to Antenna bands by flaunting them. In the center, is the vertically oriented camera housing with rounded corners. The fingerprint sensor sits right below the camera, followed by Samsung logo embellishing the smartphone. We are not satisfied with the size and placement of fingerprint sensor as It is quite difficult to reach and It still has quite a small surface area. We admire the design of Galaxy A6, It carries the surplus amount of premium and finesse, It is somewhat heavy but doesn’t compromise on build quality and construction materials.

The hardware side of things isn’t a whole lot sweet with Exynos 7870 powering the smartphone. For those who don’t know, Exynos 7780 is an octa-core CPU with Cortex-A53s all lined up and working at 1.6GHz. The device is grossly under-equipped for Its price as the devices coming in at half the price pack equal or better performance. Performance is one of the most crucial aspects of a smartphone and while the normal, everyday tasks are just fine. The deficiency in power starts to show up as you push the device further by opening several apps and switching between games.

Galaxy A6 comes in a single variant with 4GB RAM and 32GB of onboard memory. 4GB of RAM is enough for most cases and makes multitasking bearable on this smartphone. There is a dedicated MicroSD slot to expand the storage up to 256GB. The general performance is no doubt fluid and snappy but the struggle this phone faces on facing multiple apps is quite conspicuous. We recently reviewed Honor 7C which is a budget device and shockingly the performance here is quite similar. Samsung has just thrown the value for money parameter out of the window and for a smartphone priced above Rs 20k, you don’t expect that.

MALI T830 GPU is capable but is still not up to Adreno’s standards on other Qualcomm Snapdragon-based smartphones so the smartphone does fair in casual games but starts to struggle with heavy titles. On the GeekBench, the smartphone scores 723, 3605 on single core and multi-core tests respectively. On the Antutu Benchmark, the Samsung Galaxy A6 scores around 46000.

Let us talk about the camera now, As with most Samsung smartphones, the camera performance sways us away. The smartphone has a single, 16 MP (f/1.7) sensor with LED flash and while you might be complaining about dual cameras, hold on because this smartphone camera does a lot better than other smartphones which have dual sensors. Yes, the smartphone is missing the portrait tricks but It takes absolutely stunning shots whether It be bright daylight or some low-light situations, thanks to the wide aperture. In some shots, we observed excessive sharpening which is software based as Samsung has to compensate for putting a wide aperture lens. The colour reproduction is great and noise levels are fairly low, even in low-light conditions. There is a whole lot of detail and yeah, Samsung cameras do have the tendency to make the scene appear more cinematic and picturesque than It usually is so you can’t escape that.

The front sensor is equally delightful with 16MP, (f/1.9) with soft LED flash for night time selfies. The front sensor also captures some really amazing photos with tons of details and less noise even in low-light situations, It is not as good as the rear sensor in night time but It sure makes a great selfie camera. Again, the selfie camera does some softening on Its own with some added processing to make the photos appear more ‘good looking’ and that’s again a Samsung thing you can’t do anything about.  Overall, we are quite pleased with the camera performance of Samsung Galaxy A6, It does equally well on all front and rear shots with good details and dynamic range on spot.

On the software side,  Samsung Galaxy A6 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, with Samsung’s own software overlay on top. The skin is called Experience 9.0 and Its a grown-up version of TouchWiz we’d say, but a lot better. We like the overall look and feel of the skin. On top, there are some Microsoft apps which can’t be uninstalled. Experience is fast on Its way to become TouchWiz and Samsung is not much concerned. There are a lot of features, well packed in the UI and a lot of them are quite useful as well, but we feel the Samsung Experience is getting more and more bloated by each iteration.

Samsung Galaxy A6 gets Its power from a non-removable Li-ion, 3000mAh battery which is well enough for a day. Credits to this can be attributed to the OLED panel and the low-power chip which powers the device. Talking of charging, things get a little out of colour here as there is no fast charging support, on top of that there’s a MicroUSB port instead of a USB-C. There is a single downward firing speaker beside the charging port and yes, It is not outrageously loud but It is not any bad either. The device doesn’t carry any IP ratings with It, so don’t get it close to water or dust, for its longevity. The panel is an OLED panel, has Samsung’s always-on features where you don’t have to wake the smartphone to see time, notifications and other basic stuff. It makes life easy.

Brief Review:

Samsung Galaxy A6 plus is the higher variant launched along with the Samsung Galaxy A6 in May 2018. As always the build quality is amazing, with not the top notch but a decent camera and a low value for Money score. Let us talk about each of the features of Samsung Galaxy A6 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy A6+ is slightly bigger than the Galaxy A6 with a 6-inch Super AMOLED Panel with a Full HD resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels. The display comes from the line of famous Samsung ‘Infinity Displays’ so its tall at an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. This makes up the pixel density to be ~411PPI which is quite better than Samsung Galaxy A6’s ~292PPI. This difference is well seen in real life as well, where we find the A6+ having a more bright, punchy and crispier display with better contrast levels. So, this sets it out straight - Samsung Galaxy A6+ doesn’t only have a bigger screen but a better screen than Galaxy A6. There are some bezels up top and bottom as well. There’s is no notch, and the top houses an array of sensors, earpiece, front camera and a soft LED flash for selfies in low-light.

On the rear, the device is again identical to Galaxy A6 with premium metal design and quite visible antenna bands in a rounded pattern. The striking difference comes in the camera housing, where Samsung Galaxy A6+ has a dual camera set up against one on the Galaxy A6. The fingerprint sensor sits right below the cameras and again, we don’t like the position as It often leads to fingers on camera and is quite difficult to reach as well. The device is quite gorgeous and quite slippery as It comes sleek at 7.9mm thickness and weighs over 190 grams, It definitely gets tough to grip this one tight for longer durations. In all, we love the design and build quality of Samsung Galaxy A6+, Its an absolutely beautiful device with some amazing build quality with zero compromises.

Samsung Galaxy A6+ is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450. Yes, the same Snapdragon 450 found in Xiaomi Redmi 5, the budget champion. We are quite shocked with Samsung’s choices here, being a mid-ranger the least we expected is a Snapdragon 600 series SoC but the situation is even worse here. Ergo, the performance is like a budget smartphone and multitasking is quite not what we would expect with lags and hangs as the number of apps get more. On the Antutu Benchmark, the Samsung Galaxy A6+ scores around 57000 which is quite low for a performance index of a mid-range smartphone.

Adreno 506 serves as GPU and It works fine with most games but we did observe some stutter and frame drops in normal mode in some heavy games like Asphalt 8. All of this is backed by 4GB of RAM, which is great but makes quite a weird combination with Snapdragon 450.  The result is, that the smartphone is able to keep more apps in memory and hence switching is a bit faster. There is an option for expandable storage up to 256GB with a dedicated MicroSD card besides the 64GB of onboard storage. Everyday tasks are smooth and the UI is responsive, If you aren’t much of a heavy user, the smartphone performance isn’t gonna concern you a lot, but in comparison with other mid-rangers like the Nokia 7 Plus or even some lesser ones like Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A6+ eats dust.

The camera is perhaps the best thing about Samsung Galaxy A6, and it doesn’t get much different here with a single sensor now being replaced by dual sensors with the primary sensor being 16 MP (f/1.7) and secondary being 5 MP (f/1.9) with LED flash. The presence of two sensors makes Galaxy A6+ portrait mode capable. The camera performs the best at the price with best colour accuracy and dynamic range. The sensor taps on a lot of details but exposure gets misplaced at times which can be corrected with a tap to focus. There is some noise in low-light shots but they are still admirable. Moreover, the A6+ can intelligently detect objects or scenes being shot, and optimise camera settings accordingly, to get the ‘best’ shot.  We like the camera on A6+ in all, it is probably the best camera in the range right now with some micro issues, that you can look over like the colour temperature and some absurd bokeh shots at times.

The front camera is brighter with a 24 MP (f/1.9) coupled with a LED flash, and the selfies are just stunning. The front flash accompanies you through dark times and It never let us down, It gets super bright making it virtually impossible to distinguish selfies taken in daylight to ones taken at night. The big sensor keeps all the details, intact with some reasonable noise. Samsung Galaxy A6+ as a camera is quite excelling

On the software side, Android Oreo 8.0 is the in charge, with Samsung Experience 9.0 skin on top. We see a ton of redundant apps from Samsung and Google for the same thing, and now some of the apps by Microsoft have also laid permanent claim to the device. We can’t let go of the word, ‘bloated’ here. The best you can do is put all the apps in a folder, forget about it and smile. Nonetheless, we felt no hiccups while tinkering around and playing with Samsung Experience, It is still responsive and fluid like before.

There is a Non-Removable, Li-Ion 3500 mAh battery at play here, which lasts for a day at best. Samsung has had a rough time in the past with batteries so we don’t really blame them for playing safe but compared to other smartphones with the same amount of battery, Galaxy A6+ tend to last less, maybe this can be attributed to software or the general chemistry of Samsung batteries is different. A MicroUSB 2.0 port sits at the bottom for charging, yeah, no USB-C here, additionally, there is no fast charging.

The speaker on the A6+ is identical to one on the A6, so there is not much to compare here in sound quality as well. The speaker is reasonably loud but has a bit shrill in Its signature. There is a dedicated microphone for active noise cancellation during calls, which we found out to be pretty effective during our testing. The sound output via headphones is a whole different story with Dolby Atmos. The sound quality, staging and clarity are just as we’d expect from a Dolby Atmos capable device and we are quite delighted. Samsung hasn’t mentioned any IP rating for the device, so we assume none and advise you to keep It way far from liquids and dust. The panel is an OLED panel, has Samsung’s always-on features where you don’t have to wake the smartphone to see time, notifications and other basic stuff. It makes life somewhat easy.

Brief Review:

When we saw all new Nokia 6, we knew HMD isn’t gonna stop there and here we have one more - The all new Nokia 7 Plus. Announced in February 2018, Nokia 7 Plus aims to consolidate HMD’s ground in the under 25000 smartphone segment. As always, Nokia 7 Plus speaks volumes about Nokia’s commitment to design and build supremacy. It is built with 6000 series Aluminium and has copper edges looks amazing and feels amazingly solid in hand. As is with other Nokia smartphones, the pursuit of durability and sturdiness often lets ergonomics down.

Nokia 7 Plus has the all-new 18:9 aspect ratio with almost no side bezels but considerable ones on top and bottom. There’s a 6-inch, Full HD+1080 x 2160 pixels, IPS LCD display packing 403 PPI. There’s some protection with Gorilla Glass 3 on top. At the back, we have the same iconic vertical cutout for the camera and the flash with emblazoned Zeiss branding. Nokia 7 Plus has a dual camera setup, followed by a circular cutout for a fingerprint scanner.

Let’s talk about the performance of Nokia 7 Plus because the guys at HMD have been bailing on that previously. The Nokia 7 Plus has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 at its heart backed by Adreno 512 for gaming. There’s a big 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, which makes the operation swift and smooth. The storage is expandable via MicroSD up to 256GB. In the numbers game, the superb performance of this smartphone is pretty evident - 141822 on AnTuTu 7 Benchmark and 1641, 5920 on GeekBench single and multi-core tests respectively. These numbers are certainly better than smartphones like Xiaomi’s Redmi 5 Pro and Oppo R11s.

Photography is one thing we expect a Nokia smartphone to be excellent at. There’s not one but dual camera setup on Nokia 7 Plus to give fodder to our excitement. There is a 12 MP sensor which is the main lens and 13 MP sensor being the telelens for optical zoom. The camera has gyro EIS(Electronic Image Stabilization), dual pixel phase detection autofocus, 2x optical zoom along with the very famous Carl Zeiss Optics. The camera is undoubtedly one of the best we have seen in the bracket, It takes great low-light shots with low levels of noise and great detail. On the front, there’s an equally impressive 16 MP (f/2.0, 1.0 µm) sensor which guarantees great looking selfies.  If you want a great camera on a smartphone and avoid spending fortunes on flagships - Nokia 7 Plus just might be for you.

The camera app of Nokia 7 Plus has options for HDR mode, Bothie mode that allows capturing pictures from both front and rear camera together, beautification mode, and a Pro mode. Like the Nokia 8, Nokia 7 Plus comes with OZO Audio technology that captures the right sounds and reduces the noise while capturing videos.

Nokia 7 Plus runs on Android 8.0 Oreo, under Google’s Android One Program - which means timely and hassle-free updates to pure stock Android on Nokia 7 Plus. HMD promises the Android P and Q updates to Nokia 7 Plus as they are out. We really admire the stock Android experience and mixed with timely updates - Nokia smartphones are really doing great with software.

There is a big 3800mAh battery, which is great for the smartphone to be up all day long and when you do need to charge - there’s USB-C based fast charging to sweeten the experience. Nokia 7 is built with all the major connectivity features including VoLTE and Bluetooth 5.0. The smartphone is very robust in build and would hardly take a dent and has an IP54 rating which is better than nothing for protection against water. Don’t know about IP ratings? Here’s an amazing-amazing article.

Nokia 7 Plus would cost ₹ 25,999 which is again Nokia-grade overpriced. There are some amazing alternatives but If you want to go with amazing build quality and some supercool Zeiss shots, Nokia 7 Plus won’t disappoint. You can pre-book the phone on April 20th and it will go on sale on April 30.

7. Huawei P20 Lite

P20 Lite

  • 4 GB RAM | 64 GB ROM | MicroSD upto 256 GB
  • 5.8 inch Full HD+ Display 1080p
  • Back Camera: 16MP + 2MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 16MP
  • 3000mAh Battery
  • Dual Sim Device
  • Available in Colors

Best Price ₹19999

Brief Review:

Huawei P20 Lite amazes with the beautiful display and looks. It features a 5.84-inch full view display with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and FHD+ resolution. The display has sharp colours and you will not find any issue viewing it even in the bright outdoor light. It has a metal frame in between front and back and a 2.5D curved glass back with glittery textures that make it look superior to any other phone in this price segment. You would like to use a back cover as the glass is a fingerprint magnet.

On the Performance front, it is powered by a Kirin 659 processor and 4GB of RAM. Kirin 659 is the processor seen on Honor 7x, Honor 9 Lite and Honor 9i. It is a powerful processor which coupled with 4GB of RAM can handle all the multitasking and gaming you do with it, but lags way behind the Redmi Note 5 Pro which has a Snapdragon 636 scoring around 110000 on the Antutu while the Huawei P20 lite just manages to score a little above 75000. So definitely, Redmi Note 5 Pro will offer better performance.

Coming to the most talked about feature, the camera. It has a dual rear camera with 12 MP and 2MP sensor which clicks fantastic images and the camera app has various modes panorama, HDR, pro, beauty, slow motion and a few more. It has bokeh effect works perfectly fine and in the daylight, the camera has decent performance in the price range. You will see some noise when you zoom into the images but that should not affect you much. The rear camera supports 1080p video recording and we believe it should be extended to 4K through software updates to make it stand out. The low light shots are also good with no major shortcoming.

For the selfie, we have a 16MP sensor that clicks beautiful and sharp images in all lighting conditions. The camera quality and performance is not outstanding but reasonably good for the price. It has software features and beauty algorithms that very well recognizes and modifies the colour temperature, skin tone to make the photo look perfect. The software algorithms are also used to provide bokeh effects in the image.

P20 Lite comes with a 64 GB onboard storage which can be expanded up to 128 GB using a hybrid sim slot. It runs of EMUI 8.0 which is a custom skin build over Android 8.1 Oreo. There is some bloatware and overall the software experience is decent and Huawei has added some new features to its EMUI layer.

It houses a 3000 mAH battery but weighs just 145 gm and only 7.4 mm thick. The battery can power the phone for around one complete day. There is no IP rating on this phone so you would have to keep it protected from water and dust damage. It comes with a fast charger and can charge the battery from 0 to 100 percent in just 90 minutes.

It has a fingerprint sensor on the back and also supports face unlocking via the front camera. It comes with dual Bluetooth that allows you to connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Overall, a decent and complete phone for the price but faces crisp competition from the likes of Redmi Note 5 Pro and Nokia 7 Plus.

Brief Review:

Its 2018 and Notch-iness is all over the mobile world, thanks to Apple for being such a force. (Phew.) Oppo launched F7 in March 2018 and added one more device to the list of Androids sporting the infamous iPhone X notch design. The smartphone is all about modern design with bezels pushed to the ends and that cute little notch up top, guess what, Its looks very much like the iPhone X. The smartphone has a giant 6.2- inch, LTPS IPS LCD display with a 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution, packing a pixel density of ~405 PPI, we don’t need to say now that the display is just gorgeous. Even with that giant display the smartphone is just 7.8mm thick and weighs 158 grams, and fits comfortably in hands. There are some bezels up top and bottom. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass 5. The build is fairly solid, a plastic unibody design. The notch houses the selfie camera and a bunch of other sensors.

Under the hood, Oppo F7 has a MediaTek Helio P60 running the cause. Helio P60 appears to be a very capable SoC on paper with 8 cores out of which 4 are high-performance Cortex A73s while the other 4 are high-efficiency Cortex A53s, all clocked at 2.0GHz. To serve all your gaming needs there’s a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, which is not as good as Adreno on Snapdragons but gets the job done. Oppo F7 comes in two variants with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage and the other one having 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The specifications are really impressive and give good vibes about this smartphone.

The smartphone runs on Android Oreo out of the box with Oppo’s age-old ColorOS skin on top, which just doesn’t make the cut. When put under tests, the Oppo F7 scored as follows - On GeekBench 4, 1533 in single core drives and 5845 in multi-core. On AnTuTu, the Oppo F7 scores around 137000. The smartphone overpowers Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro in both GeekBench and Antutu. The smartphone has power and responsiveness, It works smoothly in everyday tasks and gaming isn’t a problem as well.

Talking about cameras, as Oppo calls Itself a camera ‘expert’, the device features a single 16MP, a f/1.8 sensor with LED flash at the back and a large 25MP,f/2.0 sensor at the front for selfies. Oppo seems to have really shown some confidence in single sensor setup this time as the results show, the camera outperforms Vivo V9, another notch-featuring contemporary. The low-light shots are great thanks to the wider aperture on the Oppo F7. The story continues with the selfie camera as well. The shots are rich, vibrant and well balanced. As there’s no secondary rear sensor, Oppo uses software tricks for the much-touted bokeh effect, which as you would have guessed doesn’t hit the spot.

The smartphone packs a 3400mAh battery, which is pretty average now-days, we are devastated that this neo-modern smartphone from Oppo shows no signs of fast charging, hell there’s MicroUSB 2.0 instead of USB-C. Thankfully, there’s a headphone jack. And to your caution, there’s no IP rating on this one so keep it as far from liquids as possible. Thanks to the power efficient chipset, Oppo F7 battery backup is great. With medium usage, you can expect 1.5 days of backup on a single charge. With light usage, it will last for even 2 days.

The smartphone is priced at ₹ 21,990 and It is not the best deal around but It is certainly one of the satisfying ones at the price. Oppo is giving a gorgeous smartphone with latest features at the decent price. Go for it if you need a gorgeous looking smartphone with good cameras, a powerful processor at around 20k.

  • 6.3 inch Full HD+ Display 1080p
  • Back Camera: 16MP + 5MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 24MP
  • 3260mAh Battery
  • Dual Sim Device
  • Available in Gold, Black Colors

Best Price ₹20990

Brief Review:

Vivo V9 is the latest smartphone launched by Vivo on 23rd March 2018. Vivo has always been focused towards the selfie camera, but this time, in addition to the Selfie Camera, Vivo has come up with many new features and yeah the notch as well. In terms of design, V9 looks mesmerizingly beautiful with a bezel-less display of 6.3 Inches Full HD+ display having 1080 x 2280 resolution. It is a FullView Display panel with19:9 aspect ratio (90% Body to Screen Ratio) and a notch at the top similar to iPhone X, but is smaller and narrower.

Talking about the specifications, Vivo V9 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 which scores approximately 67000 on the Antutu Benchmark Score. It has 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256 GB with a dedicated SD card slot and Dual sim usage.

In the camera department, Vivo V9 has a rear dual sensor of 16MP and 5MP which is placed vertically on the back. The Rear Camera produces perfect bokeh shots and uses AI techniques to improvise on the images. The dual camera has a wide angle lens so you can capture more in a single shot.  You can even shoot first and focus later, transforming every photo into an artistic masterpiece.

The front camera is a 24 MP sensor and reflects the inclination of Vivo towards Selfie, the selfie also supports depth/bokeh effect using Artifical Intelligence(AI) .V9 comes with AI Face Beauty that uses Machine Learning to find users' age, skin tone, sex and other features to "truly represent the person beauty". It also features a Selfie Lighting feature as was seen in iPhone X. So you will never be short of a great camera and selfie images anytime. It also has AR stickers for selfies which is just like Snapchat filters.

Vivo V9 also puts emphasis AI Smart Engine that is responsible to handle storage and app launching based on user behavior and AI Attention Scanning that lowers the volume of notification when the user is looking on the display. In terms of unlocking, it comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back and also supports face unlocking that again uses AI and Machine Learning (AI Face Access) that improves the accuracy of the Face Unlock Feature. Both the methods work smoothly and have very good accuracy.

On the Software front, Vivo V9 runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 which is a custom skin built over Android Oreo 8.1. The UI is clean and comes with many software features to ease your day to day activities. The battery of Vivo V9 is rated at 3290mAH and given the big screen size it lasts only for a day. Fast Charging is supported in Vivo V9 with the mobile getting fully charged in less than 1.5 hours  The battery is not a huge one to keep the check on the thickness and weight which just measure 7.9 mm and 150gm respectively. Vivo V9 is not water resistant or dust proof as it does not have any IP rating.

So if you are looking for a great camera setup and Fun of AI in your life, you can go for it, there is only one small disappointment that it runs 2 years old Snapdragon 626 which has been preceded by Snapdragon 630 and 636. Still, the overall performance is good and you won't face any lags while multi-tasking or gaming.

It is available both on Flipkart and Amazon at 22990 with different offers which can be checked on the links above. Overall, it is a great looking smartphone with excellent cameras. Go for it if your budget is around 25000.

Launch Offer on Flipkart: Flipkart is offering extra 2000 off on exchange. Plus, 5% instant discount (Rs. 1150) if you pay with HDFC cards. 0% Interest EMI also available.

Brief Review:

Say whatever, Vivo is one of the fast players in the mobile space and since 2017 was the genesis year for bezel-less smartphones, Vivo couldn’t be kept out of the circuit for long. So here’s Vivo V7+ launched in September, 2017. The V7+ builds upon the Vivo V7, in many ways.

Starting with a big 5.99 inch display at a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels, at 18:9 ratio that gives a mundane density of ~269 PPI. Vivo says that the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 4, with nearly no side bezels but some at the top and bottom, housing the camera and speakers. Vivo V7+ is quite thin at just 7.7mm and weighs around 160 grams. Not so heavy for such a large smartphone.

Looking at the smartphone, you won’t get the ultimate premium appeal, credits to plastic unibody build. The 2.5D curved screen glass gives it some premium touch though. The IPS LCD is not that impressive considering the price of the smartphone and that’s probably the elephant in all our disappointments with this smartphone. What’s no less hurting is that the smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 450 SoC, featuring 8 Cortex A53s clocked at 1.8GHz. To handle graphics, there’s an Adreno 506 onboard which is definitely not a gamer’s delight, but yeah Its quite okay for casual gaming on Android.

One thing about which we don’t know to be happy or perplexed about is the RAM. Vivo has packed 4GB of RAM in this device, which is quite not equalling to the Snapdragon 450 chipset. (Why Vivo?) Vivo V7+ has 64GB of onboard storage and is expandable via MicroSD. The smartphone is running on Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box - with no sight of Oreo update. And to lower us this smartphone more into Its grave, Vivo’s iOS-Ripoff Android skin called the FunTouch 3.2 is all over the place.

Let’s talk numbers, On GeekBench 4.1, Vivo V7+ scores 767 on single core drives and 3912 on multi-core tests. On AnTuTu, Vivo V7+ scores 57791, which is well below Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 and Note 5’s score 61616. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is on a different level with a score of above 100000.

Coming to cameras, because Vivo calls Itself market ‘leaders’ in camera, the Vivo V7+ boasts a 16MP, f/2.0 rear sensor with 1-micron pixels. On the front, we have a gigantic 24MP, f/2.0 sensor with LED flash. The rear camera performs well is daylight conditions and takes pictures with plenty of details. The performance under low-light is decent as well.  The selfie camera takes excellent pictures. There's beautify mode as always which makes you look better.

Apart from that, we have rear-mounted fingerprint scanner above the Vivo branding. The smartphone has a 3225mAh juice pack which is okay-ish but not impressive as the smartphone runs a 6-inch IPS LCD display which is bound to burn the fuel pretty fast. Thank the lord, we have a 3.5mm jack. There’s no fast charging, as Snapdragon 450 isn’t enabled for that, so embrace the USB2.0. There’s no IP rating, so if you buy V7+ please keep it safe away from liquids.

Priced at around Rs. 20000, we think it is a bit overpriced. With Xiaomi spoiling the crowd with dirt cheap smartphones with superb features and internals, it is difficult to justify this pricing. Still, if you are a selfie lover and need a bezel-less display phone then this is a decent option.
