Apple iPhone 8 Plus Brief Review and Pros Cons:
As is the tradition, iPhone 8 Plus was presented to the world besides iPhone 8, at Apple’s September Event, 2017. iPhone 8 Plus is perfectly similar to the previous Plus model iPhone 7, with some minor but observable changes on the outside like that new gold shade or as Apple claims it, the strongest glass on a smartphone at its back, making Chi enabled Wireless Charging possible on iPhones.
Apple iPhone 8 Plus carries the same design language as the iPhone 7 Plus with same surfboard design and gets a little thicker due to that glass back, but all your favourite cases should fit fine though. The display size is same at 5.5 inches, with a Retina HD display at a resolution of 1920 * 1080 (401 PPI). The display is certainly bigger and slightly richer than the iPhone 8 display, partly due to the higher pixel density. You do get True Tone and 3D Touch on this display with a wider colour gamut, making the display absolutely brilliant and one of the best ones out there.
This iPhone 8 Plus is also straight out a winner in the raw compute power race this time, powered by the new custom designed Apple A11 Bionic, and this is godly power when you pit it against the best from other SoC manufacturers. This time we have 2 Power cores and 4 Power efficient cores, Hexa-core (2x Monsoon + 4x Mistral) which are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion, additionally all 6 cores can run at the same time. Apple has shown firm believe in the efficiency of iOS, by coupling the new iPhone with 3GB of RAM, which is same as the previous generation Plus model. This time we also have a new Tri-Core, Apple designed GPU which delivers 30% faster graphics than that on A10 Fusion. The base model as always packs 64GB of onboard flash storage and can go all the way up to 256GB. The Antutu Benchmark score of iPhone 8 Plus is around 219604.
The dual camera setup on iPhone 8 Plus is again a marvel this time around with a DxO Mark score of 94, It features an improved 12 MP, (f/1.8, 28mm, OIS) + 12 MP (f/2.8, 57mm) sensors. We also have Optical Image Stabilisation(OIS) for photos and videos on only one sensor. Portrait mode gets significantly better and Portrait lighting debuts on the iPhone, with which you can now create studio lighting effects on your photos, that’s just way cool but still in beta, so don’t put your hopes high. On the front, we have a new 7MP, f/2.2 sensor, which definitely looks great compared to other smartphones with better specs on paper.
The new iPhone 8 Plus comes with iOS 11, as Apple calls it, “The Most Advanced, Secure, Intuitive Mobile Operating System” but this isn’t totally the case this time around as iOS 11 still appears to be a late beta product. It certainly needs more work, especially in the battery and efficiency department. As with others, iOS 11 is beautiful, intuitive and super secure as always, more than anything you can get.
The iPhone 8 Plus comes with relatively smaller 2691mAh battery that does seem small on paper for a big device like this but certainly shines in real life usage with a superb onscreen time of up to 6h. You do have wireless charging with Qi-enabled chargers which is totally cool but not new. Though the iPhone 8 Plus supports fast charging, the box does not bundle a fast charger.
iPhone 8 Plus as in iPhone 8 carries an IP67 rating, making it completely dustproof and waterproof for up to 1 meter of depth for 30 minutes. You can Read more about IP ratings here.
iPhone 8 Plus packs a powerful performance, brilliant camera images and a decent battery life. The only thing it lacks in is that it holds an old look, the phone is a little bulkier and susceptible to some damages because of a glass back for wireless charging.
