Redmi 5 Plus Brief Review and Pros Cons:

After a fantastic 2017, Xiaomi is getting ready for an even better 2018. All of the Xiaomi's smartphones, Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4A were bestsellers this year. Redmi Note 4 even became the best selling phone in India. Xiaomi has launched Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in China and here we will be taking a look at a brief review of Redmi 5 Plus. Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus sale starts in China on 12th December 2017 and we are expecting that Xiaomi will launch the Redmi 5 series smartphones in India in January 2018.

Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are very similar devices. The main difference is display size and resolution, chipset and battery. Let's see what Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus offers.

Redmi 5 Plus has a large 5.99-inch display on the front. The display is of 18:9 aspect ratio with Full HD Plus resolution. It is good to see Xiaomi following the trend of bezel-less displays which offer a very high screen to body ratio. The bezel-less display looks beautiful and gives a premium feel to the device. The colors are vibrant and brightness is decent. The size of the device is almost same as other 5.5 inch devices as Xiaomi has reduced the bezels. So if you are using a 5.5-inch device, you won't notice much change in device size.

There are no dedicated navigation buttons on the front of Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. Xiaomi has moved to on-screen buttons to reduce the bezel size. The phone follows metal unibody design approach and the build of the device is solid. The back of Redmi 5 is curved a bit which makes it easy to hold. There is a 2.5D glass on the display as well but we don't know whether it gorilla glass or not. Overall, the device feels nice.

On the camera side, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a single 12MP sensor on the back of the phone with 1.25-micron pixels, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash. Xiaomi has not gone with a dual camera setup so you can't take portrait mode pictures with it. The back camera performs well in daylight outdoor conditions. The pictures are sharp and vibrant. The camera performance indoors in low light conditions is average. On the front, there is a 5MP camera with a LED flash. The front camera can take decent selfies and the front flash helps under low light conditions. Overall, the camera performance is decent and we don't have any complaints as it is a budget device. If you have been using Redmi Note 4 or Redmi 4 then you will surely notice an improvement in image quality.

For security, there is a fingerprint sensor on the back of Redmi 5 Plus. The fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate and you won't face any issues with it. The Redmi 5 is not water or dust proof so there is no IP rating.

Inside the Redmi 5 Plus, we have a Snapdragon 625 chipset with 4/4GB of RAM and 32/64GB of storage. The Snapdragon 625 has been Xiaomi's favorite and they have used it in various devices like Note 4, Mi Max 2 etc. On benchmark side, you will see Redmi 5 Plus scoring around 65000 on Antutu Benchmark which is a decent score. Overall, the Redmi 5 performs tasks smoothly and you won't face any issues with multi-tasking and heavy gaming. We do recommend going for the 4GB/64GB variant as more RAM always helps in multitasking.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is running on latest MIUI 9 which is based on Android 7.1.2. We are sure that Xiaomi will be updating the Redmi 5 Plus to Android Oreo. The MIUI 9 skin is something we don't like as it is very heavy and consumes a lot of RAM. We hope that Xiaomi will move to stock android one day.

The battery inside the Redmi 5 Plus is 4000mAh. This is same as what we saw on Redmi Note 4. Efficient processor and a large battery is a perfect combination for great battery backup. You can expect 2 days of backup on a single charge with medium usage. There is no fast charging on Redmi 5 Plus so charging time will be around 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45.

So that was all we had on Redmi 5 Plus. Overall, Redmi 5 Plus is an excellent value for money device which looks great and performs well. We are sure that Redmi 5 Plus will be able to replicate the success of Redmi Note 4 in India. If you need a phone around10000 then this one is a great option.

Note: Redmi 5 Plus is expected to release in India in January 2018 so the pricing is not confirmed yet. We expect Xiaomi to price the 3GB/32GB variant at 9999 and 4GB/64GB variant at 11999.

Pros: What's great in this device?

  • The 6 inch bezel-less display is sharp and bright and looks beautiful.
  • The build is premium and the blue color device looks stunning.
  • The camera performance is good in outdoor daylight conditions.
  • Excellent 2 day battery backup on a single charge with medium usage.
  • Snapdragon 625 performs well and there is no lag.

Cons: What's bad in this device?

  • Hybrid sim slot limits the functionality as you cannot use 2 sim cards with a MicroSD.
  • Average camera performance in low light conditions.
