Redmi 5A Brief Review and Pros Cons:

Xiaomi Redmi 5A is the latest cheapest 4G VOLTE device in the market from Xiaomi. It is priced at Rs. 4999 for the 2GB 16GB variant and Rs. 6999 for the 3GB 32GB variant. The 4999 pricing is limited to first 50 lac devices only after that price will be increased to 5999. 50 Lac is a decent number so we don't see any issues.

Now coming to the build quality, Redmi 5A is made of plastic but feels good in the hand. The back is coated and looks like metal so at first look you won't even realize that it is not a metal unibody design. The plastic built of the device helps to keep the weight at just 137 grams which is a good thing. Metal phones are nice but they don't bring much to the table except extra weight and we are not a fan of that.

Redmi 5A is a 5-inch device so you will not face any problems with one hand usage. The display resolution is HD 720p. It is bright and colors are accurate. The viewing angles are also fine.

In the camera department, Redmi 5A has some decent numbers. The rear camera is 13MP F2.2 PDAF and the front camera is a 5MP shooter. The camera performance is average from both camera but considering the price point, we can't expect much.

On the top of Redmi 5A, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and an infrared sensor which means you can use it as a remote for home appliances. Cheers to Xiaomi for adding useful features like these in budget devices.

Inside the Redmi 5A, there is a 3000 mAh battery and Snapdragon 425 Chipset. Snapdragon 425 is a low-end chipset but is very efficient. You should be able to get 1.5 to 2 days battery backup with normal use.

Redmi 5A comes in 2 variants with 2GB RAM 16GB storage and 3GB RAM 32GB storage. We would suggest you go for 3GB 32GB variant if you use your phone a lot as the extra 1GB RAM will help in multitasking. If your usage is basic like calling and WhatsApp Facebook then you can opt for the lower 2GB 16GB variant.

As you can see, a lot of things on the Redmi 5A is same as Redmi 4A with one major change. Xiaomi has added a dedicated MicroSD slot in the Redmi 5A which can be used to increase the storage by up to 128GB. We always hated the hybrid slot so we are very happy to see Xiaomi going for the dedicated slot.

The Antutu benchmark score of the Redmi 5A is around 35000 which is expected because of the Snapdragon 425. This is by no means a high score, but for a device priced at 5000, this is great. As you can expect there is no IP rating for this device. We do hope that someday budget devices like the Redmi 5A will be IP67 rated.

For security, you have to rely on PIN lock as there is no fingerprint sensor on the Redmi 5A.

So overall everything is basic and average on the Redmi 5A and you cannot expect much at this price. In this price range, you will not find a better phone. If you can spend more then we recommend Redmi 4 which offers better processor, better battery, metallic back and fingerprint sensor.
