Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus Brief Review and Pros Cons:

Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus is an Amazon Exclusive Product and another budget flagship smartphone that comes with latest features and upgrades. Samsung is finally following the Bezel Less (18:9 Aspect Ratio) trend and this smartphone supports a 6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display. This phone comes with a unibody metal design which has very premium design and build quality, you would simply love it holding in the hand. The display also looks good with vibrant colours and good viewing angles. This Samsung Smartphone also supports an Always On Display which looks beautiful.

Let us now check the performance, camera and other important aspects of this phone.

Samsung Galaxy A8+ is powered by an Octa-core Exynos 7885 which has an Antutu Benchmark Score of 132496 which lacks way behind when compared to a similarly priced OnePlus 5T (Antutu 1,70,000) which has a 2017 best Processor(Qualcomm Snapdragon 835). In the speed test, obviously, OnePlus 5T wins by a margin but in the normal day to day usage you will not find any issues with the multitasking as the smartphone is powered by a 6GB of RAM (good work from Samsung for moving from 4GB to 6GB in mid-range flagship devices). It comes with an internal memory of 64GB with a dedicated SD card slot and dual sim feature so you can expand the memory and use it as a proper Dual Sim smartphone

Let us now look at the camera of this Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus, it comes with a single rear camera sensor of 16MP (f/1.7) and on the front, it has a dual sensor setup of 16MP and 8MP. So it looks like Samsung it focussing on the selfie-centric phone and ditching the trend of having a dual camera setup at the back.

The rear-facing camera performed really well in the outdoor lighting conditions with the images being sharp and good color reproduction but in the artificial lighting conditions, it struggles a lot of time and the images are blurry as the phone does not support Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) which is really saddening considering the price point this phone comes at. The other disappointing aspect of the rear camera of Galaxy A8 Plus is that it does not support 4K video, which should have been available at this price point.

While when it comes to a front camera, with the dual camera setup it is capable of bokeh effects and it comes with live focus where you can adjust the blur of the background, it has full view to capture images from the full 6-inch screen and the performance is also great, you certainly get better selfie than other phones in this price range.

On the software front, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus comes with Experience UI as was seen in Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+ and Samsung Note 8. With 6GB of RAM, the performance would be smooth with this UI and you would find easy and swift usage. The gaming performance is also perfectly smooth with no heating at all observed in the heavy games.

On the back of the phone, there is a fingerprint sensor which is really fast and accurate and unlocks the phone in a snap but the position of the sensor is somewhat little above the comfort level of your hand. you would have to stretch a bit to get your finger reach to the sensor. This Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus also supports face unlocking, where it uses the front camera to unlock, it is fast but not secured enough as on the iPhone X which has a dedicated hardware for face unlocking.

Talking about the most important aspect of the Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus is the IP rating as this phone is IP68 Certified making it completely dust and water resistant giving you a peice of mind. Know more about IP68 here.

In the battery department, this phone supports a 3500mAH battery which easily lasts for over a day in normal usage. The battery life is certainly 20% higher than the OnePlus 5T as the processor in Samsung Galaxy A8+ is weaker than on the OnePlus 5T and hence lesser power requirements.

In the box, you get an in-ear style headset, Type C USB cable and a plastic case, and a fast charger which supports (9V 1.6A or 5V 2A). So the Galaxy A8 Plus supports fast charging and can charge a phone in less than 1.5 hours.

On the speaker side, it comes with a single speaker that is located near the power on-off button. The speaker performance is brilliant, it is stable and quite loud and feels perfect while gaming, watching videos etc.

We would recommend this only if you are looking for a Samsung Smartphone that has brilliant build quality, a fairly good selfie camera and IP68 protection. It is a big no if you are looking for a phone with a good rear camera, you can look at OnePlus 5T or Honor View 10, which have an equivalent build quality and design but are not IP68 Certified.

Also if you are looking for a Samsung flagship device, you can take a look at Samsung Galaxy S7 which is around 2 years old now but is a more practical device in all the departments and still has that shine of a premium phone with one the best camera and build quality. You can get it from Flipkart for around 25000 now (it was launched at Rs 60,000) and has a good value for money.

Should you buy Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus?

Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus tries to map itself in a different segment which OnePlus 5T or Honor view 10 misses out on. It has a great selfie camera, premium and one of the best build quality and design, IP68 Certification and fast charging. But it misses out on the rear camera performance and 4K video recording. If you a samsung fan and are not affected with the not so good rear camera, you can buy this one.
