Samsung Galaxy On8 2018 Brief Review and Pros Cons:

Samsung is on a spree of launching a new smartphone in India. With Samsung Galaxy J6, J8 and On6 receiving great response from the Samsung lovers, Samsung has taken this opportunity of good times and launched the all new Samsung Galaxy On 8 2018 version. So here we are with the review, features and specification on the Samsung Galaxy On8. We have also listed a few pros and cons on this smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy On8 comes with a 6-inch infinity display or as Samsung calls it a bezel-free design, having an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 with the Samsung all-time favourite, a Super AMOLED display. The display has HD Plus resolution and before you feel disappointed of the resolution not being a Full HD as seen in other smartphones in the price range of 15000, let us tell you that the display is sharp, bright and has a perfect colour reproduction. The Super AMOLED display is perfect to watch videos, play games and the experience will not ever let you down.

In terms of the build quality, Samsung On8 is build of a plastic body (polycarbonate) with a metal frame in between back and front. Samsung is a trademark for good quality and the On8 very well justifies it. The phone feels comfortable and easy to hold in hand. Again even if you are not a Samsung lover, you will have no issues using this phone for a long time as the quality is solid and durable.

Let us now talk about the performance factor where Samsung has shown some resilience from the beginning especially in the budget segment. Here Samsung Galaxy On8 comes powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 which scores about 57300 on the Antutu benchmark. The Galaxy On8 looks to compete with Redmi Note 5 Pro and Zenfone Max Pro and Realme 1 in this price segment. Though we are not much excited with this choice of processor, but it all depends on your usage if you are not a very heavy user and only use your smartphone for normal day to day usage like browsing, using WhatsApp, watching videos of YouTube, then you will not face any problem here with the Snapdragon 450.

On the Samsung Galaxy On8 2018, We get 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory which is a good configuration and the RAM very well supports the processor and hence we did not observe any issue with low to medium end games and decent multitasking. However heavy gaming does see some frame drops and lag while using.

Next segment to discuss here in the review of Samsung Galaxy On8 is the Camera, where Samsung always puts its heart out to give you the best experience. Here On8 gets a dual rear camera with 16 MP(f/1.7) + 5MP(f/1.9) sensors and a single LED flash. With this camera on the Galaxy On8, you would be mesmerized by the sharpness and colour reproduction and contrast in the images. The shots look near to real life view and we will not hesitate to rate Samsung Galaxy On8 as one of the best camera phones in the price range of 15000 to 20000. Also, the bokeh shots are spot on with near to perfect edge detection and blurring effect. The camera has various modes like pro mode, panorama, portrait etc to keep you always engaged with it.

While every other smartphone manufacturer company is playing with AI for its camera images, Samsung with the Galaxy On8 2018 has introduced really cool features which you would not like to miss. The first one is the Background Blur Shape, where you can change the background blur light to apply objects like stars, heart etc in the blurred form which looks good in some of the pictures we clicked. The next in the  Portrait Dolly feature where we can create a GIF where the focussed object or person zooms in and out of the background giving a special stature to the focussed object. The third interesting new feature on the On8 is called the  Portrait Backdrop (Live Focus), where you get the control of changing the focus on the already clicked image and blur or add any of the different predefined effects in the background.  Samsung has also added a feature of Live Stickers, that further allows you to play with the photos by adding any of the predefined stickers to the image and have fun with it.

On the front camera, we get a 16MP sensor with a variable front LED flash and if you click a lot of selfie in your day to day routine, then you are surely going to fall in love with this camera for its beautiful image capture. The colour quality and brightness all look great for a camera in this price range. To add to the camera review on Samsung Galaxy On8, we also observed that the low light shots look good with both rear and front camera and only minor noise was observed in some cases. The front camera of the On8 also supports bokeh effect which works pretty well.

Samsung had recently launched a Char Over Video Feature, in some of the recent smartphones, and this continues with the Galaxy On8 as it is a useful feature. What this does is, it allows you to chat with your friends on social media while you are watching a video on your phone and this happens simultaneously. Here, the background of the chat box is made transparent with a small pop and does not hamper your video viewing experience at all.

As we discussed the internal storage of 64 GB, we also get a dedicated SD card slot to expand the storage up to 256 GB. This allows it to be used as a proper dual sim phone. Galaxy On8 runs of Android Oreo 8.0 with a custom skin at the top. In the software, we see some preinstalled Samsung apps and other little bloatware but the user experience is smooth and easy to use. This smartphone supports both fingerprint and face unlocking methods which are quick and accurate.

On the battery backup, we have a non-removable battery rated at 3500 mAh which easily works throughout the day. The battery can many times last more than a day because of a not so heavy processor on this smartphone.  There is no fast charging and we get a usual micro USB port and not a type C port. Also, the On8 2018 does not come with any IP rating and you should keep it protected from dust and water.

Overall, considering the previous Samsung smartphones, the recently launched J series (J6 and J8) and now the On6 and this Galaxy On8 offer great value for money as a smartphone. For a Samsung lover and even for not so Samsung enthusiast people, if you are not looking for a top-notch performance phone, this On8 offers a good perspective to bet on for a budget of 15 to 20k.
