Mi A2 is the successor of Mi A1 which was the first Android One smartphone from Xiaomi. Mi A2 is also an Android One phone and is priced little above 15000 in India. While there have been significant improvements in terms of chipset and camera performance, a lot of compromises have been made. Let's take a look at the brief review and find out whether you should buy it or not.
Mi A2 back design is similar to that of Redmi Note 5 Pro. The phone has a metal unibody design. Metal feels great in hand but it is slippery so having a case would be a good option. The dual camera setup is placed vertically at the corner and the fingerprint sensor is at the center. The antenna bands have moved closer to the top and bottom edges of the phone. The phone comes in 3 colors: Black, Blue, and Gold. If you are wondering which one is the best color of Mi A2 then our answer would be Black.
The display on the front is also similar to Redmi Note 5 Pro's display. The size is 5.99 inches with Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The display is sharp and bright with good colors and viewing angles. Overall, the phones look good and feel comfortable in hand.
Let's talk about the camera which is the USP of this device. There is a 20MP+12MP dual camera setup on the back. Both 20MP and 12MP cameras are color sensors. We would have preferred a wide angle lens or a telephoto lens. The pixels are large and the aperture is f/1.75 which helps in low light photos. The camera performance of the rear camera is great. The pictures look great with plenty of details, natural colors and good dynamic range.
The front camera has a 20MP sensor and the performance is again excellent. The selfies look great with plenty of details. You can use the beautify mode to make your pictures look better. Plus, it supports portrait mode which detects edges properly and adds a natural looking blur. Excellent camera performance makes it one of the best camera phones under 20000.
The Mi A2 is powered by the powerful Snapdragon 660 chipset which coupled with 4GB of RAM can handle any task you throw at it. Whether you like to switch between tens of apps or you like to play heavy games like PUBG of Asphalt 9, this phone is going to handle it with ease. You won't notice any frame drop or lag. It is a great option for gamers as well.
On benchmarks side, you will see a stellar performance. On Antutu benchmarks, the Mi A2 scores around 135000 which is a great score for a phone priced in this range. On Geekbench, you will see a score of around 1600 on single core and 4600 on multicore.
The phone has 64GB of inbuilt storage and there is no MicroSD slot to increase the storage. Yes, no MicroSD slot. They could have easily put a hybird sim tray in there but they decided to go against it. So if you need extra space, you don't have any option to expand it.
Plus, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack as well. Why? Maybe Xiaomi was unable to find space for it or maybe they just want to follow the stupid trend of removing the headphone jack for no reason at all. When IP68 rated smartphones like LG G7 can have the headphone jack then why can't Mi A2? Removal of the headphone jack and MicroSD slot from Mi A2 are couple of the things that we hate most.
Inside the Mi A2, there is a 3010mAh battery. The device would last for a day on medium usage. With heavy usage, you might need to charge it in the evening. Battery performance is just average here. The phone does support Quick Charge 4.0 which should charge your device very quickly but the fast charging brick is not included in the box and you need to buy it separately. It comes with the normal 5V 2A charge in the box.
The device is running on stock Android Oreo. It is an Android One device so you will get software updates very quickly. The latest Android P should arrive in a couple of months. There is very little bloatware on the device which makes multitasking a breeze. RAM management is good as well.
So should you buy Mi A2? Depends on what you want and what you can live without. If you need excellent camera performance, powerful chipset and stock android and you can live without a headphone jack, a MicroSD slot and average battery backup, then go for it.
If you need a good battery backup, a headphone jack and MicroSD slot with little lower camera performance then Redmi Note 5 Pro or Asus Zenfone Max Pro 6GB are better options.

Overall
Mi A2 is a nice smartphone but you have to compromise with a lot of things as well. Go for it if you are looking for a phone with powerful chipset, stock android and great cameras. Avoid it if you want good battery backup, a headphone jack or a MicroSD slot.
