Brief Review:

Nokia came back last year with Nokia 6 and launched plenty of devices after that. Overall response to Nokia smartphones has been decent. Now, Nokia has launched the successor of Nokia 6 which is Nokia 6.1 Plus. Nokia 6.1 Plus is a midrange smartphone priced around Rs. 15000 in India. Let's take a look at what it offers in this brief review.

Nokia is known for their excellent build quality and Nokia 6.1 Plus is not an exception. The phone is well built and feels very solid in hand. It weighs around 150 grams and the thickness is around 8mm. With excellent build, the design is gorgeous as well. The phone is covered with glass on both sides and looks very premium.

The display on the front is 5.8 inches notch display of 19:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution. The display is bright and sharp with good viewing angles. Because of 5.8 inch display and thin bezels, the size of the smartphone is smaller compared to phones like Redmi Note 5 Pro. The size is perfect for you if you don't like big phones. You won't face any trouble while using it with one hand.

On the back, we have a fingerprint sensor and dual camera setup. The fingerprint sensor is accurate and quick. The dual camera setup on the back has a 16MP color sensor of f/2.0 aperture with 1um pixel size. Plus, there is a 5MP depth sensor which helps with edge detection to give bokeh effect in portrait mode pictures.

On the front, there is a 16MP single camera sensor which can also take portrait mode selfies. The camera performance is good in outdoor natural lighting conditions. The images look colorful with plenty of details. The portrait mode also works well with good edge detection. Similar is the case with front selfie camera. The camera performance under low light conditions is not great though. We hope Nokia fixes it with a software update.

Inside the Nokia 6.1 Plus, we have a Snapdragon 636 processor powering the device with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Snapdragon 636 is a very capable midrange processor with excellent performance. We have already seen it on phones like Redmi Note 5 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro. 4GB RAM + SD636 is a good configuration for a midrange smartphone. You won't notice any lag while using multiple apps or playing games. On the benchmark side, you will see a score of around 110000 to 115000 on Antutu benchmark.

64GB is a decent amount of storage. If you need more, you can use the MicroSD slot provided. Do note that it is hybrid slot and you won't be able to use the second sim if you are using a MicroSD Card.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is an Android One smartphone and runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. There is no bloatware at all. Stock android makes the overall experience very snappy with quick switching between apps. Because it is an Android One device, you can expect quick updates. Android P should arrive in a couple of months.

The battery inside the Nokia 6.1 Plus is an average one. The battery capacity is just 3060mAh and you can expect a day of backup with medium usage. If you are a heavy user, you might have to plug the device in the evening. The phone supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 but doesn't come with a fast charger inside the box. Buying a fast charger would be a good investment for heavy users.

Nokia 6.1 Plus isn't water or dust proof so there is no IP rating for it. The glass on the back and front makes it a bit slippery so add a case if you are one of those who tend to drop their phones a lot.

Nokia 6.1 Plus comes in 3 colors: Black, Blue, and White. If you ask us, which one is the best color then we would suggest you the Black version. The other 2 colors are great as well.

Overall, we love the Nokia 6.1 Plus. It has great design, excellent performance, and good cameras. The only negative point is the average battery backup but it is not a deal breaker. Earlier Nokia phones were a bit overpriced but this time Nokia has done well. The pricing of 15999 is really good and makes it one of the best phones in this segment.

Nokia 6.1 Plus is a Flipkart exclusive smartphone and it will be available from 30th August.

Features

  • 4 GB RAM | 64 GB ROM
  • 6 inch Full HD+ Display 1080p
  • Back Camera: 20MP+12MP Dual Camera
  • Front Camera: 20MP
  • 3010mAh Battery

Brief Review:

Mi A2 is the successor of Mi A1 which was the first Android One smartphone from Xiaomi. Mi A2 is also an Android One phone and is priced little above 15000 in India. While there have been significant improvements in terms of chipset and camera performance, a lot of compromises have been made. Let's take a look at the brief review and find out whether you should buy it or not.

Mi A2 back design is similar to that of Redmi Note 5 Pro. The phone has a metal unibody design. Metal feels great in hand but it is slippery so having a case would be a good option. The dual camera setup is placed vertically at the corner and the fingerprint sensor is at the center. The antenna bands have moved closer to the top and bottom edges of the phone. The phone comes in 3 colors: Black, Blue, and Gold. If you are wondering which one is the best color of Mi A2 then our answer would be Black.

The display on the front is also similar to Redmi Note 5 Pro's display. The size is 5.99 inches with Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The display is sharp and bright with good colors and viewing angles. Overall, the phones look good and feel comfortable in hand.

Let's talk about the camera which is the USP of this device. There is a 20MP+12MP dual camera setup on the back. Both 20MP and 12MP cameras are color sensors. We would have preferred a wide angle lens or a telephoto lens. The pixels are large and the aperture is f/1.75 which helps in low light photos. The camera performance of the rear camera is great. The pictures look great with plenty of details, natural colors and good dynamic range.

The front camera has a 20MP sensor and the performance is again excellent. The selfies look great with plenty of details. You can use the beautify mode to make your pictures look better. Plus, it supports portrait mode which detects edges properly and adds a natural looking blur. Excellent camera performance makes it one of the best camera phones under 20000.

The Mi A2 is powered by the powerful Snapdragon 660 chipset which coupled with 4GB of RAM can handle any task you throw at it. Whether you like to switch between tens of apps or you like to play heavy games like PUBG of Asphalt 9, this phone is going to handle it with ease. You won't notice any frame drop or lag. It is a great option for gamers as well.

On benchmarks side, you will see a stellar performance. On Antutu benchmarks, the Mi A2 scores around 135000 which is a great score for a phone priced in this range. On Geekbench, you will see a score of around 1600 on single core and 4600 on multicore.

The phone has 64GB of inbuilt storage and there is no MicroSD slot to increase the storage. Yes, no MicroSD slot. They could have easily put a hybird sim tray in there but they decided to go against it. So if you need extra space, you don't have any option to expand it.

Plus, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack as well. Why? Maybe Xiaomi was unable to find space for it or maybe they just want to follow the stupid trend of removing the headphone jack for no reason at all. When IP68 rated smartphones like LG G7 can have the headphone jack then why can't Mi A2? Removal of the headphone jack and MicroSD slot from Mi A2 are couple of the things that we hate most.

Inside the Mi A2, there is a 3010mAh battery. The device would last for a day on medium usage. With heavy usage, you might need to charge it in the evening. Battery performance is just average here. The phone does support Quick Charge 4.0 which should charge your device very quickly but the fast charging brick is not included in the box and you need to buy it separately. It comes with the normal 5V 2A charge in the box.

The device is running on stock Android Oreo. It is an Android One device so you will get software updates very quickly. The latest Android P should arrive in a couple of months. There is very little bloatware on the device which makes multitasking a breeze. RAM management is good as well.

So should you buy Mi A2? Depends on what you want and what you can live without. If you need excellent camera performance, powerful chipset and stock android and you can live without a headphone jack, a MicroSD slot and average battery backup, then go for it.

If you need a good battery backup, a headphone jack and MicroSD slot with little lower camera performance then Redmi Note 5 Pro or Asus Zenfone Max Pro 6GB are better options.

Brief Review:

Samsung is on a spree of launching a new smartphone in India. With Samsung Galaxy J6, J8 and On6 receiving great response from the Samsung lovers, Samsung has taken this opportunity of good times and launched the all new Samsung Galaxy On 8 2018 version. So here we are with the review, features and specification on the Samsung Galaxy On8. We have also listed a few pros and cons on this smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy On8 comes with a 6-inch infinity display or as Samsung calls it a bezel-free design, having an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 with the Samsung all-time favourite, a Super AMOLED display. The display has HD Plus resolution and before you feel disappointed of the resolution not being a Full HD as seen in other smartphones in the price range of 15000, let us tell you that the display is sharp, bright and has a perfect colour reproduction. The Super AMOLED display is perfect to watch videos, play games and the experience will not ever let you down.

In terms of the build quality, Samsung On8 is build of a plastic body (polycarbonate) with a metal frame in between back and front. Samsung is a trademark for good quality and the On8 very well justifies it. The phone feels comfortable and easy to hold in hand. Again even if you are not a Samsung lover, you will have no issues using this phone for a long time as the quality is solid and durable.

Let us now talk about the performance factor where Samsung has shown some resilience from the beginning especially in the budget segment. Here Samsung Galaxy On8 comes powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 which scores about 57300 on the Antutu benchmark. The Galaxy On8 looks to compete with Redmi Note 5 Pro and Zenfone Max Pro and Realme 1 in this price segment. Though we are not much excited with this choice of processor, but it all depends on your usage if you are not a very heavy user and only use your smartphone for normal day to day usage like browsing, using WhatsApp, watching videos of YouTube, then you will not face any problem here with the Snapdragon 450.

On the Samsung Galaxy On8 2018, We get 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory which is a good configuration and the RAM very well supports the processor and hence we did not observe any issue with low to medium end games and decent multitasking. However heavy gaming does see some frame drops and lag while using.

Next segment to discuss here in the review of Samsung Galaxy On8 is the Camera, where Samsung always puts its heart out to give you the best experience. Here On8 gets a dual rear camera with 16 MP(f/1.7) + 5MP(f/1.9) sensors and a single LED flash. With this camera on the Galaxy On8, you would be mesmerized by the sharpness and colour reproduction and contrast in the images. The shots look near to real life view and we will not hesitate to rate Samsung Galaxy On8 as one of the best camera phones in the price range of 15000 to 20000. Also, the bokeh shots are spot on with near to perfect edge detection and blurring effect. The camera has various modes like pro mode, panorama, portrait etc to keep you always engaged with it.

While every other smartphone manufacturer company is playing with AI for its camera images, Samsung with the Galaxy On8 2018 has introduced really cool features which you would not like to miss. The first one is the Background Blur Shape, where you can change the background blur light to apply objects like stars, heart etc in the blurred form which looks good in some of the pictures we clicked. The next in the  Portrait Dolly feature where we can create a GIF where the focussed object or person zooms in and out of the background giving a special stature to the focussed object. The third interesting new feature on the On8 is called the  Portrait Backdrop (Live Focus), where you get the control of changing the focus on the already clicked image and blur or add any of the different predefined effects in the background.  Samsung has also added a feature of Live Stickers, that further allows you to play with the photos by adding any of the predefined stickers to the image and have fun with it.

On the front camera, we get a 16MP sensor with a variable front LED flash and if you click a lot of selfie in your day to day routine, then you are surely going to fall in love with this camera for its beautiful image capture. The colour quality and brightness all look great for a camera in this price range. To add to the camera review on Samsung Galaxy On8, we also observed that the low light shots look good with both rear and front camera and only minor noise was observed in some cases. The front camera of the On8 also supports bokeh effect which works pretty well.

Samsung had recently launched a Char Over Video Feature, in some of the recent smartphones, and this continues with the Galaxy On8 as it is a useful feature. What this does is, it allows you to chat with your friends on social media while you are watching a video on your phone and this happens simultaneously. Here, the background of the chat box is made transparent with a small pop and does not hamper your video viewing experience at all.

As we discussed the internal storage of 64 GB, we also get a dedicated SD card slot to expand the storage up to 256 GB. This allows it to be used as a proper dual sim phone. Galaxy On8 runs of Android Oreo 8.0 with a custom skin at the top. In the software, we see some preinstalled Samsung apps and other little bloatware but the user experience is smooth and easy to use. This smartphone supports both fingerprint and face unlocking methods which are quick and accurate.

On the battery backup, we have a non-removable battery rated at 3500 mAh which easily works throughout the day. The battery can many times last more than a day because of a not so heavy processor on this smartphone.  There is no fast charging and we get a usual micro USB port and not a type C port. Also, the On8 2018 does not come with any IP rating and you should keep it protected from dust and water.

Overall, considering the previous Samsung smartphones, the recently launched J series (J6 and J8) and now the On6 and this Galaxy On8 offer great value for money as a smartphone. For a Samsung lover and even for not so Samsung enthusiast people, if you are not looking for a top-notch performance phone, this On8 offers a good perspective to bet on for a budget of 15 to 20k.

Brief Review:

Honor has been very aggressive in the under 20000 smartphone range. They have launched Honor 9 Lite, Honor 7X, Honor 9i which have received great response from the users. Honor is now launching Honor 9N, which is a rebranded Honor 9i(2018) launched in China. It comes with a notch display and beautiful design and is a good smartphone under 15000. Let us look at the reviews, specifications and features of this beautiful phone.

Honor 9N comes with a 5.84-inch notch display with a Full HD Plus resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. The display is a full view display having an aspect ratio of 19:9. In terms of design, it has a glass design and looks similar to the one seen Honor 9 Lite. The front has a notch and the back has a horizontal dual camera setup with a LED flash at the top and a fingerprint sensor. Honor has launched Honor 9N with a tagline of #ExtraOrdinaryBeauty and the design and looks truly upholds the statement. It is lightweight and easy to hold and operate with one hand.

On the performance side, Honor has once again used the in-house Kirin 659 processor which we have seen in all the midrange phones starting from Honor 9 Lite, Honor 9i (2017) and the Honor 7X. This smartphone has 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of internal storage. We have seen the similar configuration in all the Honor phones in this price range and though Kirin 659 is not a powerhouse as Snapdragon 636 seen in Redmi Note 5 Pro but does handle multitasking with ease and one can easily go through all the daily tasks without any difficulty. But that Kirin 659 at the pricing of under 15000 does not raise the bar in the performance side when compared to the likes to Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max or the Mi A2 which has just launched. Honor 9N scores around 75000 on the Antutu Benchmark.

Coming to the camera, Honor 9N supports a dual rear camera setup with 13MP as the primary sensor and 2MP sensor as the secondary sensor with Dual tone LED flash and autofocus. The camera works fine with clear and crisp shots and good colour reproduction. The camera also supports face detection, portrait (bokeh) mode and HDR mode. The front camera is a 16MP shooter which is located inside the front notch and as expected clicks beautiful pictures and also supports portrait shots via software processing.

Honor 9N runs on EMUI 8.1 which is a custom skin based on the Android 8.1 Oreo and works smooth. They are some bloatware but Honor has well refined the EMUI over the years. There is a hybrid micro SD card slot to expand the memory up to 256 GB. Honor 9N supports both fingerprint and face unlocking mechanism and both of the methods work accurately and swiftly. Honor 9N does not carry any IP rating so keep it safe from the dust and water.  It has a battery rated at 3000 mAh which can keep the phone powered up for a day. You would need to charge it after a full day usage.

Honor 9N though has been launched as the rebranded version Honor 9i (2018) but in actual it is a more beautiful version of all the Honor midrange phones. It has a stunning looking notch and is Honor's first phone under 15000 with a notch. The dazzling looks are very attractive and if you are looking to buy a phone under 15000 with a notch display, Honor 9N has to be your top choice. If you are not much concerned with the high-end gaming or heavy usage, this phone would work through easily.

The 3GB 32GB variant is priced at Rs. 11999 and the 4GB 64GB variant is priced at Rs. 13999. Honor has added a 4GB 128GB variant as well which will cost you 17999. We think the middle variant 4GB 64B provides the best value for money.

Brief Review:

Xiaomi has come up with another phone in the under 10000-15000 segment. The Redmi Y1 which was launched last year as a selfie smartphone has received some significant upgrades in terms of internal hardware, cameras, and display. Let's take a look at the brief review of Redmi Y2.

Redmi Y2 comes with a 5.99-inch display of 18:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution. The display is bright and vivid with good color reproduction and viewing angles. The resolution is not Full HD so that's a bit disappointing but it is not a deal breaker. The bezel-less on the top and bottom have reduced so the overall size of the phone is similar to other 5.5 inches phones. The build quality of Redmi Y1 wasn't that great but Xiaomi has done a good job with Redmi Y2. The device feels good in the hand. The back is metal so it is a bit slippery but you do get a free transparent case in the box. It comes in 3 colors: Grey, Gold and Rose Gold. Our favorite color is Rose gold.

Inside the Redmi Y2, we have the same Snapdragon 625 chipset which we have seen on Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 5. Snapdragon 625 is a decent performer and very power efficient chipset so we don't have any complaints. The phone is available in 2 variants: 3GB RAM-32GB Storage and 4GB RAM-64GB Storage. If you are a heavy user and use a lot of apps and games then go for the 4GB-64GB variant. If your use only camera, social media apps etc then 3GB variant should be fine. The overall performance of the device is good and you won't face any lag during the day to day usage. Redmi Y2 scores around 70000 on Antutu benchmarks which is similar to Antutu score of other Snapdragon 625 devices like Redmi Note 5 and Mi A1.

Let's talk about camera now. Redmi Y2 is a camera-centric smartphone and have received a good upgrade in the camera department. There is a 12MP+5MP dual camera on the back. The camera is placed vertically just like it was on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The 12MP camera is a color sensor and 5MP camera is a depth sensor which helps to take portrait mode shots with depth effect. The rear camera performance is good in both daylight and low light conditions. The pixel size is 1.25um which helps to improve the low light performance. Edge detection in portrait mode is good as well.

The selfie camera on the Redmi Y2 is a 16MP sensor with a front flash. The front flash is very useful in low light conditions. The front camera also has portrait mode and can take pictures with depth effect. In our initial tests, the front camera performance was good. Edge detection wasn't that great and you might see your hair getting blurred in some of the shots. The front camera has features like AI beauty which removes blemishes and makes you look beautiful. The front camera is also used for face unlock which is not that quick but still, performance is decent. If you don't like face unlock then there is a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. It is safe to say that Redmi Y2 is the best budget camera smartphone available in India under Rs. 10000.

Redmi Y2 comes with MIUI 9.5 out of the box which is a custom skin based on Android 8.1. We don't really like MIUI because it comes with a lot of bloatware and the UI isn't great either but you can change that with a launcher. If you like to use dual apps, second space etc then MIUI is great for you.

The battery inside the Redmi Y2 is 3080 mAh and would last for a day on single charge. It would have been great if Xiaomi has gone with a 4000 mAh battery like on Note 5 and Note 5 Pro. The charger inside the box is 5V, 2 Amps charger which will charge the device in around 2 hours.

It is a dual sim device and Xiaomi has added a dedicated MicroSD slot this time which is great. If 32GB or 64GB is not enough for you, you can slide in a MicroSD card to increase the storage by up to 128GB. Redmi Y2 is not waterproof or dustproof and doesn't have any IP rating so keep it away from water and mud.

The Redmi Y2 has been priced at 9999 for the 3GB-32GB variant and 12999 for 4GB-64GB variant. It is an Amazon India exclusive device. We think pricing is decent and you are getting good value for money. The price of the lower variant is same as Redmi Note 5. Redmi Y2 has better cameras and Redmi Note 5 has better battery and display. So go for Y2 is you are going to use the camera a lot. If you don't use the camera much then Note 5 or Realme 1 is a better option.

Brief Review:

So as we are all quite aware of the superb Motorola G series which has been a bestseller in the budget and upper-mid segment for Motorola for a few years now. Since the budget segment floor is always slippery with more and more competitions incoming, Motorola had to keep up with all the latest tech standards in the mobile space, circa 2018. So here’s the all new Moto G6.

The Moto G6 takes the premium appeal to the next level which is quite enhanced with the glossy back metal finish, with more curved edges which are really good in the hands. The device is definitely an eye-catcher but there has been more trickling down of premium features as you would have guessed.

There’s a 5-7-inch, IPS LCD display on the front with 18:9 ratio at a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels taking pixel density to 424PPI which is far better and lovely than that on the new E lineup. The display like any IPS LCD from Motorola is vibrant, bright and just lovely to use. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is an added bonus.

Below the screen, there’s home button, which is more like a bar than a button. It supports the gestures from previous Motorola phones and also acts as the fingerprint sensor. On the back, we find the Motorola-style round cutout with the same paint as rest of the body housing the camera setup, below which you’ll find the Moto branding embossed.

Under the hood, we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 with Adreno 506 GPU. The device is set to arrive in two configurations - 64 GB, 4 GB RAM or 32 GB, 3 GB RAM. Snapdragon 450 is a decent chipset for budget phones and its performance is similar to that of Snapdragon 625. The usual everyday tasks will run without any issues with the SD450. Adreno 506 should be comfortable with all the games on the Play store but the experience might not be very smooth with the high-end titles like PUBG. The benchmark numbers for Moto G6 are here - It scores 3795, 735 on GeekBench multi-core and single-core tests, while we observed a score of 70244 on AnTuTu benchmark.

Its dual-cameras everywhere and Motorola couldn’t resist with It with the Moto G6. In the circular cutout, we find a dual-camera organization with 12 MP (f/1.8) + 5 MP (f/2.2) sensors. Obviously, the low-light performance is observably better and you get all the dual-camera tricks such as the depth effect and the portrait shots, while they are not the best we’ve seen they are certainly good in the range. On the front, there’s an 8MP, f/ 2.2 selfie camera sensor which is good enough. Overall, we are satisfied with the camera performance of G6 and is one of the best cameras in the budget segment, given Its price is close to ₹ 12k.

Android 8.0 runs the show on Moto G6 and It’s clean, responsive and one of the best Android experiences out there. Motorola is not the fastest with updates but It is still better than others like Samsung.

The smartphone comes with 3000mAh battery which can last you for the day but not more. The phone supports fast charging so that should make up for the smaller battery inside the G6. Lastly, there’s no specified IP rating by Motorola, so It’ll be a lot safer to keep this device away from any kind of liquid.

Overall, Moto G6 is an excellent looking device with decent performance. The Moto G6 at Rs. 13999 for the 3-32GB base variant and 15999 for the 4-64GB variant and is exclusively available on Amazon India.

Brief Review:

Asus has partnered with Flipkart to launch exclusive smartphones for next 3 years. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is the first smartphone to be launched under the partnership. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 has specs similar to Redmi Note 5 Pro which has been doing very well in the Indian market. Let's take a look at the brief review of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

Below is an overview of Zenfone Max Pro 6GB RAM variant. If you are interested to know more about this phone take a look at our in-depth review of Asus Zenfone Max Pro.

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a 5.99-inch display with Full HD+ resolution. The display has 450 nits brightness and is very colourful and vivid. The viewing angles are good as well. The display is covered with a 2.5D glass which gives it a premium look. Asus has reduced the bezels on the top and bottom so the overall size of the phone is still same as a 5.5-inch device. The design is bit boring though. You get metal unibody design so nothing special or new here. The phone weighs 180 grams which is surprising considering the massive 5000 mah battery it carries. Overall, the phone feels good in the hand.

Let's talk about the battery which is the USP of this device. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a large 5000 mah battery which will provide a battery backup of 2 to 3 days on a single charge. If you hate charging your phone every day then you are going to love Max Pro M1. Asus claims that it can run Youtube for 20 hours. The phone comes with a 10-watt charger and it charging time is expected to be little less than 3 hours. The charging time is decent considering the large battery size.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a dual 16MP + 5MP rear camera with a 1.12-micron pixel size for better low light performance. The camera performance is good under daylight outdoor conditions. The pictures look colorful with a good amount of details. The camera can take portrait mode pictures as well. In our initial tests, the bokeh effect looked good with proper edge detection. The rear camera can also record 4K videos. Asus claims that this is the best camera in class.

The selfie camera on the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is a 16MP shooter with a LED flash. The front camera is a great performer in both indoor and outdoor lighting.

The chipset inside the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is Snapdragon 636 which was launched globally with Redmi Note 5 Pro. The SD636 chipset is very powerful and can handle any task you throw at it. Using multiple apps and games is going to be a breeze. Thanks to the powerful chipset, Zenfone Max Pro M1 scores around 116000 on the Antutu Benchmarks which is a bit higher than the score of Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Asus is taking audio quality very seriously as well. There is a Maxxbox which amplifies the sound by 2X. For audio via 3.5 mm jack, Asus has added an NXP audio chipset which improves the sound quality. Sound quality is usually not given importance in the mid-range devices so it is good to see Asus doing something different here to improve the user experience.

On Software side, you get pure Android Oreo on Zenfone Max Pro M1. This is a great step from Asus. There is almost no bloatware on the device. Asus promises to provide next 2 big Android updates as well. So you will get Android P and Android Q

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes in 2 variants: 32GB storage and 3GB RAM variant would cost your Rs. 10999 and 64GB - 4GB variant will cost you 12999 only. This is excellent pricing from Asus. Asus has used LPDDR4X RAM which should improve the overall experience. If you are a heavy user then go for the 4GB RAM variant as the extra 1 gig of RAM should help a lot in multi-tasking. The MicroSD slot is dedicated so you can use 2 sim cards with a MicroSD card. The 6GB RAM variant comes with better front and back camera setup and is priced at 14999.

Overall, we think Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is an impressive device. It comes with the latest display, powerful chipset, decent cameras, pure Android. Multitasking is great and the battery lasts for 2 days. It is clearly one of the best phones in this price range.

Brief Review:

Xiaomi has grown tremendously over last 2 years and disrupted the Smartphone Market to become the leader. This is credited to the success of Redmi 4, Redmi 4A and Redmi Note 4 which were bestsellers last year.  On 14th Feb, Xiaomi has launched Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India and is set to break and shake the industry again. Check out Redmi Note 5 here.

Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch Bezelless(18:9) display which looks beautiful and marks the entry of Xiaomi in bezel-less phones in the budget segment. The infinity display has a resolution of 1080p Full HD Plus which good viewing angles and vibrant and punchier colors. Note 5 Pro has a metal unibody design and a very strong build quality, something inspired by the Redmi Note 4.

The display size, though, has increased to 5.99 inches, the size of the device is almost same as other 5.5 inch devices as Xiaomi has reduced the bezels. So if you are using a 5.5-inch device, you won't find any difficulty operating with Redmi 5 Pro. With no bezels, the navigation buttons move to On-Screen buttons.

On the Camera side, the smartphone does a wonderful job, it comes with a Dual Rear Camera with a Sony12MP sensor with f2.2 aperture and a Samsung 5MP sensor with f2.0 aperture. These 2 lenses on the back are stacked vertically, similar to something seen in iPhone X. The dual camera can take excellent portrait mode pictures with bokeh effect. Performance is similar to what we saw on Mi A1.

On the Front Camera, we have a special selfie-focused Sony IMX376 sensor, with a resolution of 20MP and f2.0 aperture. It is a great camera for selfies lovers. There is flash on the front side so low light selfies also look decent. Do note that the front camera is capable of taking portrait mode selfies as well with bokeh effect. During our initial test, the selfies came out sharp. The portrait mode worked well with good edge detection and blur effect. We think Redmi 5 Pro is probably the best selfie phone from Xiaomi.

Let's talk about video recording now. Redmi Note series has been weak with video recording as there was no stabilization available. But things have changed now and Redmi Note 5 Pro has EIS(Electronic Stabilization) so the videos won't be shaky and will look much better than other Redmi Series smartphones. In our initial tests, the videos looked good and stabilization also worked well. There's no option to record 4K videos so that a negative.

The camera on both front and rear does a brilliant job overall and you won't have any complaints given the price point at which Xiaomi offers all these features. This Camera performance of Redmi Note 5 Pro has a lot of improvements compared to Redmi Note 4(2017 Best Selling Smartphone) or the Redmi Note 5. Camera lovers won't be disappointed with Redmi Note 5's performance.

This budget beast gets a big boost in the processor department and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 which has an Antutu Score of around 1,10,000. Redmi Note 4 comes with Snapdragon 625 which scores around 65000 on Antutu benchmark. So by this comparison, the Note 5 Pro has 70-80% more processing power.

It comes in two variants, one with 4GB RAM and other with 6GB of RAM clubbed with 64 GB of internal memory in both the variants, assuring of a power-packed performance with Smooth Multitasking and no lag or delay even with the higher end games. Xiaomi has used DDR4 RAM here which is a great thing because we don't really see DDR4 in budget phones. Only the flagship phones are using DDR4 as of now.

The back of Redmi Note 5 Pro has a curved back making it easier to hold and grip. There is a 2.5D gorilla glass on the display. With a strong build quality, great looks, this Note 5 Pro certainly feels nice in hand. Xiaomi has added a translucent silicon case in the box which fits the phone very nicely. Thumbs up to Xiaomi for adding a free case.

Redmi Note 5 Pro, comes with a fingerprint sensor that is quick in unlocking your phone. Xiaomi has added the face unlock feature in the first update. In our initial tests, the face unlock has been working great. It is quick and unlocks the phone in less than a second. Plus, it works even when your phone is about at waist height and you are looking at it. So, you can just take your phone out of pocket and look at it, it will unlock. You don't need to lift the phone to face height to unlock it. We liked the speed and accuracy of the Xiaomi's face lock. Also, it didn't work when eyes were closed so you don't have to worry about someone unlocking your phone when you are sleeping.

The Redmi Note 5 is not water resistant or dust proof as it does not have any IP rating.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is running on latest MIUI 9 which is based on Android Nougat 7.1.2,  which will surely be upgraded to Android Oreo in the near future. Those who love stock android won't like the MIUI interface so just go for Nova Launcher.

Still not able to hold what all this smartphone offer. Hold Tight. Apart from raking in the best features in all the departments, This Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a big 4000mAH which can easily last of 1.5 - 2 days in case of normal usage, given it comes with a power efficient processor. In first few days of use, we got 7 to 8 hours of screen on time which is excellent for a large 6 inch display phone with a powerful processor.

Our charging tests are still in progress and we will add results here soon.

With ranking high in this department as well, Redmi Note 5 Pro, does not leave any point that can be strictly negative towards it.

Overall, Redmi Note 5 Pro is a great value for money smartphone which looks decent and performs well. If your budget is around 15k then go for it.

Brief Review:

Honor 9 Lite is the latest smartphone in India from Huawei/Honor in the budget segment of around Rs. 10000-15000. Before this, we have seen 3 launches from Honor in last 4 months. The first one was Honor 9i, the second was Honor 7X and third was Honor View 10. We liked all those devices, now let's take a look at Honor 9 Lite.

Honor 9 Lite looks stunning. The phone is covered with glass on the front and back and has a very glossy finish. Yes, it is prone to fingerprints but when it is clean, it looks gorgeous. I don't remember the last time we saw a budget device that was this beautiful. If you are wondering which color is the best then my first choice would be Blue, then grey and then black. This is just a personal preference. Go with the color you like most.

The build of the phone is solid and it feels good in the hand. We have a 5.65-inch full view display with Full HD+ resolution. The display is large but the phone isn't because of the smaller bezels. You won't face any issues with one hand usage. The phone is slippery because of glass design so that might be a problem.

The aspect ratio of the display is 18:9 which is something we are seeing in all latest smartphones. The display is covered with 2.5D glass. Once again, we don't know whether there is tempered gorilla glass or not. Looking at Honor's past record, we think it is not a gorilla glass so getting a tempered glass for your Honor 9 Lite would be a good idea.

The Honor 9 Lite comes powered by 2.36 GHz Octa-Core Kirin 659 processor, which is a powerful processor capable of handling all the normal multitasking swiftly. We have seen the same chipset on the recently launched Honor 7X and Honor 9i. The chipset performs well and is efficient as well so we don't have any complaints. On Antutu benchmarks you will see a score of around 62000.

The multitasking Honor 9 Lite assisted by 3 or 4GB of RAM depending on which variant you buy. It comes with 32/64 GB of internal memory. Plus there is a MicroSD card slot which can be used to increase the storage by up to 256GB. The slot is hybrid so you can either use 2 sims cards or 1 sim card and a MicroSD card. We hate the concept of the hybrid slot because it limits the functionality of the device.

The USP of the device is the camera setup. Honor 9 Lite has a dual rear camera and dual front camera, The rear camera is a 13MP + 2MP dual camera while the front camera is a 13MP + 2MP dual camera. the dual camera setup allows additional effects to be added to the photos clicked. Both camera setups have an RGB camera sensor and a monochrome camera sensor. Details are captured from both cameras to make images sharper. Plus, they help to give a bokeh/depth effect to your pictures also known as portrait mode. We have seen the same camera setup before on Honor 7X and 9i and the performance are same. The pictures are nice in outdoor lighting. The bokeh effect also looks good in pictures from both front and rear cameras. The camera performance under low light conditions is average which is expected from a smartphone in this price range. Overall, we think the camera performance is decent and you won't be disappointed.

Honor 9 Lite also supports the feature as seen in other Honor phones where the image background can be blurred even after clicking the image. This feature is really good as you can blur the background to your liking after taking the picture.

For security, the back of the phone supports an active fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. The fingerprint sensor is fast and responsive and you are not going to face any issues with it.

The Honor 9 Lite runs EMUI 8 which is a skin based on Android 8 Oreo. EMUI has some useful customizations like drawing an S for a long screenshot to capture an entire web page, tap twice with one finger for a screenshot, and tap twice with two fingers for screen recording. These small features can be very useful. There is some bloatware on the device but those apps can be uninstalled.

The handset supports 3000mAH battery which should be sufficient for more than a day for normal usage. It comes with a 5V 2Amp charger and there is some kind of fast charging so you can expect your device to charge from 0 to 100% in around 2 hours.

Honor 9 Lite is not waterproof or dustproof so there is no IP rating for this device. Keeping it away from water and dust would be a good idea.

Honor 9 Lite comes in 2 variants: 3GB-32GB and 4GB-64GB priced at 10999 and 14999 respectively. It will be available on Flipkart from 21st Jan.

Overall, Honor 9 Lite looks like a great looking budget device with decent overall performance and nice dual cameras on both sides. If you like to take selfies then you should consider this device. Even if you do not click selfies, the premium build, beautiful display, lag-free performance makes it a great option in this price range.

This was a brief overview of Honor 9 Lite. We have a done a detailed review as well. Check out the detailed review of Honor 9 Lite.

Other options in this range include Mi A1 and Moto G5S Plus. We think Honor 9 Lite is a better option because of better processor, better and larger display and dual front camera which is not there in other devices.

Brief Review:

Moto G5S Plus is the updated version of Moto G5 Plus which was launched a few months ago. Things that have changed are the display size, camera, and storage.

G5 Plus had a 5.2-inch display and G5S Plus has a 5.5-inch display panel. Resolution is same at 1080p Full HD. The display is sharp and vivid and viewing angles are good. There was a 12MP camera on the back before but now we have 13MP + 13MP dual camera setup which helps to give bokeh effect to the pictures. Plus, you can change the background of an object in the picture using inbuilt features. Motorola has done a great job at integrating these features directly into the camera app of Moto G5S Plus.

On the front, we have an 8MP camera with flash. Front flash is a great addition for selfie lovers and should help in improving quality in low light conditions. Overall both camera perform really well and it is safe to say that Moto G5S Plus offers best camera experience in this segment. On the storage side, we have 64GB internal storage now which was 32GB before in the G5 Plus.

The processor is same Snapdragon 625 with 4GB of RAM. The hardware is good and G5S Plus is able to handle heavy games easily so it is a good mid range option for gamers as well.

The build quality has improved. Previously the sides of Moto G5 Plus were plastic but now it is all metal. The phone feels very solid in hand and has a premium look. The battery has been kept the same at 3000mAh. You should get a day of backup with a single charge. Moto G5S Plus comes with a fast charger so battery backup should not be a problem.

With these improvements, Moto G5S Plus has become a very solid competitor in the mid range segment. G5 Plus was launched at Rs 16,999 but the improved G5S Plus has been priced at Rs 15,999 at launch which is excellent pricing.

Mi A1 is another good option in this range which can take even better pictures. See our blog post: Comparison of Moto G5S Plus and Mi A1 Plus
